  • Switching Cameras to sinlge video input on SATNAV

    Hi All

I have just gotten hold of a Toyota SATNAV system that as I understand can take a reverse camera.

Adding a single camera is pretty straight forward, find the plug needed and connect it (simple in those words).

But as usual I want to take it to another level.

I have a camper trailer and so I want to be able to switch between cameras - either the reverse camera for reversing and hooking up and then to the rear van camera when travelling (and keep it on constantly).

The latter of keeping it on constantly should be fairly easy from what I have read so far in that the reverse gear selected signal just needs to be spliced into and switched accordingly by a switch on teh dash.

Its the former that is more the issue at the moment.

As the unit only has a single AV input I need an AV switch (well V only) so I can select between cameras as desired.

AV switches are a dime a dozen when considering your home entertainment system, problem is they dont have remote switching. I want something that will allow a switch on the console so I can select the camera.

While I am at it, I amy as well make allowance for a forward facing camera a well. So baskically I want a three in one out video switcher with a remote trigger to select the desired input (having three makes it a little harder, so it two is the easy I will stick with that)

Has anyone got a switching setup in their rig yet and if so any leads on how to do this in a vehicle.

    Mick

No, thats a 240V unit that has no wired remote switching. not suitable for a vehicle install at all.

The switcher is to be mounted so that it is not visible with only some switches on the console as the way to operate.

        A rotary switch? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotary_switch

The 120 Grande has one such switch to select the comfort settings for the shocks. It may be adapted to do video channel selection.

Now that is what I am looking for. As long as it can be used without the "control pad" it will do nicely. They have lots of good stuff there. Lots more ideas comming in now.

If it was me (I like using the "Junk" in my shed)

Three PCB mount relays in a shielded jiffy box, three way switch on the dash controlling them.

Don't forget to add a diode to your reverse camera override circuit so when you manually switch the camera on your reverse lights don't come on.

For $40, what about this one on eBay

If it is mounted hidden, you could probably unsolder the "select" button on the top of the unit and run wires to a remote pushbutton somewhere convenient.

if you wanted to switch it by hand you could go for something fancy like this
                  http://www.kramerelectronics.com/pro...p?pid=19&sf=29
its mechanical so no power required.. but not cheap at about $130 US.

essentially if you are happy to have a mechanical switch which exchanges 3 pairs or Tip/Sleeve RCA's (composite video) you could do this with a rotary or 3 way switch, but it would need 3 pairs
of in's to one RCA out.

have a look at post 6 on this thread, there is an Audio switcher, something like this would be cheap, maybe from jaycar. Its meant for audio but would work in the same way I believe.

Wouldn't you only need to switch the centre pin / video signal? The shield can all be combined together. Therefore you only need a single 3-way switch.

yes you are correct actually, a 3 way toggle or rotary would do this, for a moment I was thinking of phase issues but it wont matter.

I have a three way switch for the rear and underside camera on mine. Switch is "Rear-Off-Front" for me:

p.s yes dont forget the diode on the reverse light but also include a diode on each camera power line so when one is powered the other is not...
                        Cheers

I have been reading and it appear that there is a way to select two different inputs by using two resistors of different values. The Disc-Aux button may select between two inputs when present. More research on that is required at the moment.

I wasn't going to switch the video signal directly because I thought it would degrade the picture too much but it may be a solution if others reckon that it works OK.
