  • 4WD Driver Training near Melbourne

I am looking at doing a 4WD Driver Training Course to gain more confidence with off-road driving. I would appreciate feedback from anyone who has completed a 4WD driver training course near Melbourne in recent times. I've done a search but the threads I was able to find were quite old.

Currently I'm looking at either joining the Toyota Landcruiser Club of Victoria and doing their Driver Awareness Program or the 4x4 Driver Proficiency Course run by Four Wheel Drive Victoria.

The TLCV course is run over a practical weekend in Yarck with 1 night of theory in Mulgrave. The disadvantage is the distance to travel for the practical component. It costs $280 which includes the TLCV Joining Fee.

The FWDV course is run closer to Melbourne with the practical bit being run out at Werribee IIRC. It's also nationally accredited. The disadvantage is that it's only 12hrs spread over an evening of theory and a day of practical training. The cost is $300 for non-members. The course is cheaper (only $170) if you are a member of an affiliated club or become an Associate Member of FWDV which costs around $115.

On the face of it the TLCV course would appear better value as you get club membership as part of your Joining Fee (TBC) and access to their property out at Yarck, plus it's a longer course. Is anyone here a member and is the course any good?

I'm leaning towards the TLCCV course as it's longer than most of the commercial courses plus for $425 both me and Mr Fido can do the course and get a year's membership to the TLCCV and FWDV. I'm planning to rock on down to their next monthly meeting and suss out the quality of the instructors and the course content.

We have learned a lot on our regular day trips with the Vic PP crew and the GTG (thanks guys for looking after us there), some formal training can't hurt though.

The basic course is a Thursday evening theory session (in Box Hil?) then a full day (following Sunday) practical training at Narbethong.
He has advanced courses of varying types eg High Country over 2 days.
Jim is fully acredited and does training for commercial and government organisations as well 4wd enthusiasts.

Agree the TLCCV set up looks good. Having said that my wife recently completed the Four Wheel Drive Victoria program and was pretty impressed, both the instructor and content. She actually did the women's program for which the theory session was mixed but the practical day was a small female group. (Having recently joined a club it also seemed pretty good value.). The prac day is at the Melbourne 4×4 Training and Proving Ground www.melbourne4x4.com.au

We have joined the TLCCV and booked in for their Driver Awareness program in October (was the 1st available course). Went along to the meeting last week and spoke to the DA co-ordinator and a couple of the instructors and feel confidant the course is good value. There is a night of theory and then an overnight stay at their property in Yarck to do the practical component. We aren't complete novices but still have lots to learn and I hope to come out of the course more confidant in the abilities of my vehicle. I'll post some feedback once I've done the course but it's a way off so stay tuned.
