I know NSW any new trailer or interstate rego transfer has to have rated safety chains. First I have heard about shackles.

I noticed that many late model cars with tow bars come with rated shackles. On a side note, during recent AUSTRANS operations here in Broome and Kununurra they found 1 in 4 caravans with break-away breaking systems didn't work. That would certainly put value in having proper rated shackles.Last edited by Bushbasher; 23-12-2014, 08:23 PM.Dave

Having a WLL on shackles has been law for quite some time. I haven't checked but presumably the ADRs or Codes of Practice specify a load rating required based on trailer capacity. First I have heard of anyone being fined though. Mine are HR branded so I need to check if they are stamped with a load rating. My 150 build - http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?27423-A-Random-approach-to-a-Bluestorm-150-GXL-D4D-automatic

Obviously ARB has it all wrong, someone should let them know.

The ARB points are probably the only recovery points on the market that would come within a bulls roar of the standards for rigging, and as I said they are designed to have the shackle the other way round.
Anyway that's all getting way off topic, I've had rated shackles on my towbar for years so new laws have no effect on me.

May be simplistic but I would have thought the strap on the pin would be best. It would give even stresses right across the width of the straps eye where as the other way puts more stress on the outer edges of the strap. Also the shackle in the recovery point hangs naturally in its neutral position and shouldnt slide under stress which a flat surface will probably do.

I found some interesting info on shackles tonight. I had a look at the NTs rules as I'm moving up there next year. Turns out you must have rated shackles up there and it has been that for 4 years.

A point load should only ever be on the pin if it can be centred and kept there. It doesnt happen in recoveries.
If you had the strap in the bow it bunches and pulls on the edges first, edge loads reduce overall load rating of straps. If the pin is through the recovery point it then is almost certain to slip to the edge of the pin, therefor taking the overall load axis off centre reducing the load rating of not only the strap but the shackle itself.
ARB is right in application AJ120

Yes that's correct about the load being central on the pin. Another thing is that a shackle shouldn't really be use for snatching as they should never be shock loaded, the WLL on a shackle is rated for lifting. We could go on and on about it and in the end we will all still use shackles for recoveries

According to Camper Trailer Touring Facebook page, QLD Transport "recommends" rated shackles. Not mandatory apparently. I remember when I got my camper changed over to WA rego from QLD I had to change the chains and shackles to rated ones. That was about 4 years ago. Can't we just keep travelling?
