  • Toyota tow bar snatching

Like many others on PP I have the Toyota tow bar fitted which having recently been recalled has me concerned. Especially on the associated thread about the quality of this thing.

But is it good enough to use for recoveries? - snatching and being snatched backwards (not sure if it makes a difference) ???

When I did a beach driving course a couple of weeks ago the instructor said it is good for light to medium recovery. I'm guessing don't try and pull a really stuck heavy vehicle out

I wouldn't use the OE towbar for towing let alone snatching. Fit some intended for purpose recovery hooks into the existing chassis rail threaded inserts and use a bridle.

When I bought my 120 I asked the dealer if the OEM Towbar was rated for recoveries. It was "not recommended". They sent the car around the corner to Park Towbars where I got the Reece hitch bar installed.

Read what it says on your towbar, and it doesn't matter what towbar or what vehicle you are looking at, it will say for towing purposes only. That's what they are tested for that's what they are rated to, no towbar is tested or rated for snatch recoveries. The rating on the towbar is in the Prado's case 2500kg, it doesn't take much for most 4wdrives to go over 2.5 tonne, so even flat towing them on the bitumen you could easily be exceeding the rated capacity of the towbar.

That's why I have 2 recovery hooks and use a bridle.

            Cheers Andrew

OK I'll bite. - It doesn't take 2.5 ton to flat tow a 2.5 ton vehicle. Unless you're towing it up a vertical slope, but that wouldn't be "flat towing".

But I'm sure you know that.

                  Cheers

That's correct, you don't have a 2500kg force on the towbar when towing a 2500kg load, but the people that design the testing and rating criteria know that. That's the critical point really, towbars are designed and tested assuming you are pulling a rolling load, not a severely bogged load that may not budge an inch.

                    Cheers Andrew

Check out the picture above. The green 'strap' in this case is the bridle.
