Guys i have been looking at UHF's latly and particually, the uniden ones, many cause of price. my only concern's are

1, as the mic plugs in on the right hand sand does it gt in the way of your left leg?

2, the slim line models, without a front speaker, do they require an additional speaker to be installed? cheers.

Save the extra few dollars and get a GME, miles better radio. Or is that wavelengths better :?:

The TX3220 from GME is their entry level radio, check around the web you can find some good deals about.
    Try this one.

i have a uniden uh089 while it is a good little radio it has the speaker on the bottom which can make it a pain to hear some times, but you can pick up an extension speaker for $20 and this will help a grear deal with clarity.
and the mic plug doesnt get in the way of my legs, if this does worry ya mount ya radio under the ashtray

thanks for the tips boys, i think the cost diffrence would be about 50 bucks and i'm not too against that. think i might spend a little more again, i would like the speaker built into the front, just neater i think.

thanks again for all the help lads. i'll let you all know

the rest of the unit (with the speaker) is up under the drivers footwell

          i can hear it perfectly.

you can now get a unit with it all on the handset:

          very neat imo.

i have uhf radio's in every car including house and shed.
(i also used to have a sml trucking business of 8 trucks)
              i now have;
              GME 3400 in 1 car
              GME 3200 in 2nd car
              GME 4200 in work car
              uniden UH088 in house
              and uniden UH077 in shed.
              my neighbour has the GME4400.
(all my trucks ran GME 4200 using the SECALL function)
my preference with all of these would have to be easily
GME3400, for ease of fitment location and the features. clear winner to me.
if i wanted a DIN size unit with front speaker, then GME4400.
after years of using uhf's to me, uniden don't have to features that i want.
thats my experience and my 2 cents

                  Hi PradoFreak!

For the clearest sound I recommend you use an external speaker.

I have a GME TX 3440 located in the glovebox stacker compartment. Even with the glovebox closed the little speaker in the unit is certainly adequate for my purpose. I raised the unit off its base (where the speaker is located) with little balls of blu-tack... works a treat .

The only time I have a little trouble hearing it is when scanning the local police and ambulance frequencies... though I only need to open the glovebox and it is clear again. Otherwise, for car-to-car comms, car-to-base, car-to-handheld, and car-to-repeater, it's ideal for my ears. LOUD AND CLEAR.

No matter which unit you choose, a quality external speaker will improve the sound quality and volume. You could get fancy with the external speaker also, maybe a small amplifier or locate it closer to your 'better' ear... heck, I'm sure nothing is beyond your talents after seeing you squeeze the new engine in the old rig!

Just so you can hear me...

                  CHEERS,
                  LFAR

i have an out there idea, that in theory works.
mount a good quality small external speaker "in" your headrest.
the advantage of this would be that the foam and material in the headrest would quieten the static/sound and only voice type frenquencies would be heard.
after your heart transplant (vehicle), a hearing aid operation would be a piece of cake, DR pradofreak 8) 8)
volvo trucks have 2way and telephone speakers now in the headrest part of their seats. it works, and it is clear as.
you can always adjust the squealch up a little/alot to reduce interferance.
all desend uhf's have this function/capability.

I saw some Cabs in Sydney a fair while ago with a TX/RX speaker in the side of the head rest and also in the roof lining adgacent the drivers head. If those guys use that arragement it must be a winner.

I used to run a small extension speaker between the head rest and the seat. Just jammed it in and ran the speaker down inside the seat cover. I think it was a dick smith speaker.

Worked a charm! As a radio nerd i have an Icom 208H and the missus does not like listening to it all the time.

Now I have the speaker under the centre console in fornt of the trnasfer lever.
Can hear it no worries and it cant be seen.
