  • Friday arvo disaster

    Hi, first time post..
Just though Id share an unfortunate experience I had on my way home from work on Friday afternoon.
It'd had been a very trying week and I was well over it, on my way home the fuel light came on but I really just wanted to get home and have a beer! I recalled that I had a few things to do and decided to quickly duck in and fill up.
Being a Friday arvo the general population leaves their brains at work all in a rush to start their weekends, and this Friday was no defferant. I waited and waited in line for one of the fuel bowsers and eventually got my turn.
I looked at the nozzles and as I went to grab one the next car behind me decided that he wanted to see how close he could get to the ass end of my car.. Retard.. Anyways with that small distraction I gone ahead and grabbed the nozzle shoved it in and started pumping. Meanwhile the old lady next to me was struggling with the simple task of placing her nozzle back onto the bowser which took her about four goes.. More distractions and my need for a beer growing i've racked up $187 "click" it's full. I payed and got the hell outta there as soon as I could.
Driving down the road about a km.. Burr burr bup burr??? Wtf..?? My car starts to miss and surge... What is going on here??
And then I've realized.. F@$k me I've just filled my car full of unleaded!!!
Such a sinking feeling and I couldn't believe what I'd done. I immediately pulled up in a parking spot, shut it off and called the Mrs.
"You dickhead" she proceeded to tell me "how much money did you waste?".. Don't worry about that I've said, just grab as me as many jerry cans as you can and the jiggle hose and get down here..
She's come down and it turns out that you can't siphon fuel from a 150 series.. What am I going to do now? I've climbed underneath and looked for a drain plug or something, nothing.
We ended up calling a tow truck so I could get it closer to home and needless to say I nailed quite a few red cans that night.
The next morning, still not sure what to do I had an idea.. I've jumped in the mrs's can and darted down the shops to get some bits and pieces.
I grabbed an inline 12v fuel pump some hose and fitting as well as some wire and alligator clips.
I removed the intake hose from the filter assembly and hooked up the Macgyver inspired pump and ran another hose into the first jerry can..
connected the alligator clips to the battery and vuala!! out comes the poison!!
About an hour and six jerry cans later I put 20L of fresh diesel in and pumped that through as well, changed the filter and put another 20L in.
Nervously started the engine and left it to idle for about 45 mins. It revved slightly higher than usual for the first 5 mins but was back to normal after that.

In summary I still cant believe what I did, but after talking to a few people it appears that this is a pretty common thing. the tow truck driver said he comes across about 1-2 a week which makes me feel a little better.
Anyways one thing I did was to google what to do and how to get the fuel out.. which I didn't have much luck with so this is why i'm writing this story and hopefully for the next poor bastard so they'll know what to do.

Speaking to Toyota and they said considering I only drove about 2k's down the road there shouldn't be any repercussions, if I had of continued to drive/run it on unleaded it would have destroyed the injectors etc..as the diesel acts as a lubricant and petrol breaks it down.
obviously it wasn't good for it but hopefully no damage done.

Dont be too hard on yourself, you are not the first and won't be the last to do it and at least it looks like you did no damage. Nice idea on pumping the fuel out too, I'll keep that in the memory bank in case the dreaded happens.

Welcome to the club I self named, "the dick head club". As I too have filled a Diesel pradopoint with unleaded and I mean filled it to the bream. $148.63. I normally fill up at the high flow pump but this day it was out of order. As soon as I hung up the nozzle the had that sinking healing and all I could say was F@&k, F@&k, F@&k. I pushed mine out of the way and call Toyota, they sent the towy and $600 later to drain both the tanks, I filled it up again....this time the right stuff DIESEL.
Both the towy and Toyota recon that the copers do it all the time because they have both petrol and diesel cars.
            So easy to do......

Obviously not an ideal situation, but kudos to you for pulling over and having it towed.
I'm sure you would have caused a hell of a lot of damage if you kept driving.
I know plenty of people who would have kept driving, so we'll done.

You reckon that's a disaster! On Friday morning the builder I was working for decided to help me by opening the tailgate on my truck which he the folded back against the side of said truck. At lunch time I got in the truck to go half a kilometre up the road to the shop . It s ok I'll leave the tail gate open . I was crawling up a very steep hill at probably 15 kph . There was a boat parked on the side of the road , I thought I'd give it a wide berth . As I went past it BANG . I looked in my side mirror to see the boat swaying from side to side at the top of a very steep hill. I'm thinking that even if I jam it in reverse and floor it , I'm not gonna catch that boat if it starts to roll . I don't think the VW Polo down the road is going to stop 2 tonnes of boat and it's gonna take out someone's house . Luckily the boat went nowhere . I got out to find out what the hell happened as I still had no idea , to find the tailgate was open and had never been locked in place . Sensational. It's gone straight through the back of a fibre glass boat and then exited through the side of it . I can see a $600 payment to the insurer coming up and maybe an add . The scariest thing about this is the thought that if this had happened while passing a cyclist or kid on a bike or a pedestrian or the boat had taken off down the hill, somebody may have been killed . The poor boat owner will get back from his holiday to find his boat ain't looking to flash .

I no shit happens. but don't you have to lift the operating switch on the bowser to operate the diesel at the servo. as a petrol car owner - I couldn't miss take that dirty diesel fuel gun for a petrol? . but in all that - you re-covered very lucky.maybe buy yourself a lottery ticket

was topping the car up this afternoon and next to me at the servo was this poor NSW Disco TDV6 waiting to try and get it onto a tow truck. Yep, had filled it up with unleaded (was 91 RON as well). All the holiday stuff in the back, 3 or 4 kids sitting around bored, wife looking so impressed with him and a tow truck operator that couldn't get it onto the tilt tray for some reason.

Been with my dad when he did it the other way round too. We had a diesel 4x2 ute. So when we borrowed a hilux 4x4 to go on a fishing holiday, he filled it up with Diesel but it was a petrol. Made it 200m down the road before it spluttered to a halt.

Trip was a day late leaving but we got there in the end. I've been told diesel into a petrol less of an issue than petrol into a diesel for the pre-common rail anyway.

I quite often pump out incorrectly fuelled vehicles for work. We have a pump set up very similarly to yours. Unleaded into a diesel is understandable, the nozzle fits, but how on earth do you put diesel into an unleaded car, the nozzle doesn't fit!?!?

The worst one i saw was a current Hilux diesel complaining with lack of power. Took it for a quick drive, and yeah, ran like shit and had no power. Opened up the fuel filter and wow, unleaded. Apparently they fuelled the car up about 150Km ago and put 40L into it, as far as i know that car is still going fine with no problems too.
