On the way we drive from Newcastle to Pt Augusta and overnight at the Standpipe Motor Inn. We stay there cause they have a good Indian restaurant and I do like a good Palak Gosht.
It makes for a long day behind the wheel and we usually set off around 4 am in order to get to Pt Augusta before the sun goes down.
However there is the option of stopping at Broken Hill where we normally stay at the Outback Villas. Very good accommodation for two adults and two kids. They are very nicely appointed and Maccas is just down the street which makes for a cheap dinner.
We make it to Alice on the next day.
However if you were more inclined to take it a bit easier then we can recommend the Outback Villas for the first night then head to Coober Pedy for the next night, our recommendation for accommodation in CP is The Mud Hut. They have great two bedroom apartments with kitchen etc and they have normal motel style rooms plus they have a good restaurant as well.
Then next day head to Alice which would be an easy 6 hour run.
As for filling up, we fill up at Newcastle then Pt Augusta then Alice.
The reverse drive we normally will head to Broken Hill but if that is too long for anyone then Pt Augusta, then Dubbo or all the way to Newcastle.
At Dubbo we like to stay at the Cattlemans Motor Inn as they have great two bedroom apartments and they do NRMA rates. The other motel we like is the Dubbo RSL motel and the Dubbo RSL does a good cheap dinner.
Cheers

How do you think a standard caravan will do on the trip or is it off road trailers only?
Russ
The rest of the travelling is perfectly good for a standard van unless you want to accompany Stan through Boggy Hole. Then you would definitely strike problems.
The idea is to set up camp and then go off and do the side trips to Arltunga, N'Dhala Gorge etc so no need to take the campers along.Roll on the 2010 Pradopoint GTG
