it is almost impossible to get paint to stick to powder coat properly
a chip in powder coat, moisture gets in and it will look like sh1t, the coating will lift
I don't 100% agree with these comments, as long as you rough up the powder coat base you can get the paint to stick.
Having the coating lift on a chip is more to poor prep than the powder coat finish itself. I've had lots of powder coated bar work with lots of chips and scratches and never had moisture get in.
I had my local crash shop paint mine over the powder coat, they told me they used a special hardener in the paint. Mine seems to be standing the test of time and I would happily go colour coded again. On the other hand I did a bit of work on a colour coded bar just recently that I am pretty sure was painted by ARB, just looking at it the wrong way was causing the paint to chip or scratch, it was soft as compared to mine.

fair comments D$D and AJ
i can only go on my previous experiences and the flat out no to painting over the powder coat i got.
i am sure it is possible to get good results and good the here some have.
AJ, sounds like a quality paint used by you local guy.
the other one you mentioned done to a price?
i could go on and on but lets leave it at that.
I don't really know how the other one was painted or cost, I just know its not nearly the same standard as mine. One of the advantages of getting local work in a small country town, I probably paid a few extra bucks, but they have to do quality work because reputation is everything in a small town.
Cheers Andrew

AJ
you hit the nail on the head.
reputation is every thing.
not only small towns.
when people (car enthusiasts) send work interstate to get it done right.
reputation = your only as good as your last job.
And you hear more about the bad than the good.
Who cares about paying as bit extra if it is really done right.
One of ARB's main warehouse is in Melbourne, the ARB dealer I go through is in Albury (NSW). When I purchased my colour coded bar and steps, it was sprayed in Melbourne before it was sent to Albury. My vehicle is black (ebony), it looks way better with a colour coded bar and steps instead of the standard satin black. Who ever it was, they have done a marvelous job (exact colour as the car).
