  • Jumper lead cables as winch extension cables

I have purchased an electric winch (200kg capacity) to winch my boat onto the roof rack.
But I need some extension cables - 3.5 metres. I went to Supercheap Auto only to find that 7 metres of cable would cost more than the winch.
Then I spotted some heavy duty 3.5 metre jumper leads at half the price. BUT the jumper leads have a "surge protector" to protect your computer.
So the question is will the jumper leads surge protection interfere with the operation of the winch?
I hope there is someone out there that can answer this difficult question.

I wouldn't even try as you'll melt the jumper leads. Sure they're probably rated at 700A+ but only for a very short time unlike your winch usage. You'll probably find it's only 6mm copper under 10mm of insulation.

The surge protector should not interfere, its essentially just a capacitor across the two terminals and no different electrically when you engage the vehicles starter motor. As D4D said, be mindful that supercheap 'heavy duty' jumper leads are probably heavy duty insulation which means very little copper wire inside. Unfortunately when it comes to copper cable, you get what you pay for. You could try an auto elec wholesaler or maybe even jaycar to compare prices.

Would welding cables from an industrial supplier work?

what's the full load current rating on the winch?
          will you need full power?
200kg winch, without knowing gear ratio and line speed quick guess 30A full load.
3.5 mtrs 10mm2 should cover it.
