  • Advice wanted on beach towing with the 150 series Prado

    Hi
We have a 2014 150 series Prado & are thinking about buying a Jayco Starcraft Outback (17')
We have looked into the weight ratio's etc & think we will be fine towing normally but we do enjoy beach camping & need to make sure we will be okay to go to places like Moreton island/Fraser etc. We need to be sure both the car & Van can go to these places before we make the investment.
Has anyone had any experience in this or has any advice?
    Thanks in advance.

Like all beach driving its the entry and exit points that will be difficult.
If you get stuck it's almost impossible to reverse out and try again with a heavy van behind you.

Having been to Moreton & Fraser a number of times I wouldn't consider towing a van that weights 1.5t unless you are well prepared with one or more support vehicles to assist when you get stuck, because you will.

Have you considered a hard floor camper trailer rather than a van?

We already have a old Jayco Flight Camper which we have taken to Moreton etc and never had a problem but now the kids are getting older & we need more room we are considering the upgrade. Also would love a full size can to make one nighters doable.
I think we need to asess either the van choice or whether we will be ok with not visiting places like Moreton or Fraser. We think we will be ok at Straddie as its mostly roads anyway but the others not so much.
We do always go with a big crew so support will be plenty but I still do not fancy being stuck each time we do these trips.
      Thanks for your input

Getting stuck is part of the fun! And if you have other vehicles with you, you won't be stuck for long. Remember plenty of $$ people tow there 3.5T fishing boasts up to Orchard beach and generally only need help getting through Indian Head. Once your there, it doesn't matter.
