  • 2nd Spare wheel stowage and location

    Hi

I have a 2004 Prado TD and reckon a second spare wheel is a must for travelling outback........I am in Perth WA.

I am just wondering where I can get a spare rim from that is suitable for the 2004 Prado? The vehicle is standard with the alloy rims that came with it.

The second question is...I normally tow a camper trailer...but on my next trip I want to use an Outback rooftop camper and travel light...no trailer this time. I am planning a run up the Central H'way, Kings Canyon, McDonnells, Tanami, Bungle Bungless, Gibb River and back to Perth.

Where can I stow a second spare wheel? What do you guys do, how do you go about it, what solutions have you found for this conundrum?

    Ideas appreciated, thanks.

You can also out them up on a set of roofies... If you can lift it up there!

Rhino do a kit for a spare. Although you're probably better of paying the extra to get a larger tray

        well

        Thanks

I want to run a rooftop camper so wouldn't be able to carry a spare up top.......plus that is a lot of weight up there.

K&N in Canningvale do a rear twin wheel carrier.

I don't believe they're particularly cheap, but they are specifically
          for the 120 series.

I used to travel with someone who simply tied a tyre carcass to the spare on his rear door. Its relatively light weight (compared to a tyre and rim) and was easy to get to.

The biggest problem was it meant you had to remove the old tyre from its rim and install the new one, and its probably only something you'd want to do if the original was trashed or in need of major repair.

But an R&R Beadbreaker makes relatively light work of taking tyres off in the bush. The complete package comes with tyre plugs as well which means you may not even have to take the wheel off the vehicle to fix a leak.

You could carry a steel spare from the wreckers, a bit narrower and easier to cart around.
Just need 6 steel wheel nuts, can be used as an anchor for winching too.

I use the Rhino wheel carrier on the Rhino tray.

Problem is it robs a heap of rack space especially on my small tray 1200 x 1010. Makes fitting anything else up there a bit of a pest.

                      Beadbreaker sounds like the go...
