  • Portable butane cookers withdrawn from sale in NSW

I sure many of us have one of these cookers that have been recalled
"Testing, undertaken at the request of NSW Fair Trading and other State gas regulators, has found a fault with the cookers’ shut-off valves, posing a risk that the devices may overheat and could explode."

and interesting youtube vid [watch from 2.20min]

I m only surprised that they were ever for sale, I've always thought they were dangerous. Far too flimsy for my liking

I have got mine underway as well.
if r4ndll delvers them for the price I offered might be a good burn off.

Anyone every heard of one popping?
I think you may be at risk if you allow a pan or similar to sit over the can & generate heat.

Thousands being used & I have not heard of one popping......... Who has?

Have heard of a few gas bbq's at home having fires etc from leaking hoses.
Maybe we should ban all portable gas appliances.

I'm with you ####, used these for as long as I can remember, and never had a problem. I guess common sense isn't that common!

Never had a problem with mine either. Was looking at one of those double burners with the big hotplate. might have to get on it quick before other states follow on. But then again will never get banned in the NT- we are just too tough up here

Spot on ####. Over Xmas experienced a flame coming out of the BBQ hose at the join with BBQ. Quick turn off at the tap fixed it. Cause - loose connection. BBQ is very old and its just worked loose overtime. Almost ruined a good steak.

I do wonder how many users know not to cover the canister?

I have called it uncommon sense for 25yeaRs now.
But they make rules for everybody right, have to guide the less fortunate folk. so I also say rules were made to be broken.
Everybody has to remember butane is very volatile & dangerous, so make sure the can is correctly installed, & KEEP THE HEAT/HOT PAN AWAY FROM ABOVE THE GAS CAN, fire extinguisher & fire blanket is worth having handy anytime using gas burners.

Another one, see the home BBQ can be very dangerous, personally I don't like the old gas lamps either.

Well lets hope if they didn't know they do now, or will learn from the hoorah of banning their sale.
I'm sure there has been a failure or so, Thats what it's about, but if in the last 10 years we have never heard of 1, the odds are low.
If we ban everything with a risk, we may ban life.

Not sure how a public warning / safety advise is helping to "your words" ####ed the country.
not much different to rated recovery points on our Prado, someone with expert knowledge identifies a deficiency with a product that could have serious safety outcomes ,and advises others of the danger. It seems pretty common that if no rated recovery points then you are not allowed to participate in a organised 4wd trip, maybe on these same trips then these stoves could be banned from being used due to danger to innocent bystanders as it is the same scenario.
For me the warnings are issued not only to protect the dumb operator but also for the benefit/protection for those around the user who could be injured or killed.
Having had 30 plus years in the gas industry, seeing 1st hand the consequence of gas explosion that killed a mate, and also seeing the outcome of these cookers that have failed and exploded, I just hope that sensible people take heed to the warning and if they don't then I hope they don't camp and use one of these cookers near me, and they don't use them around their own family members. This was why I posted up the warning.

Thankx for posting the warning, it will be educational for thousands.
Have you seen one of these cookers explode?

Another friend I was talking to today, I informed him about it & I found out he is another to add to the list of a home BBQ gas bottle/hose fire.
We should never underestimate the dangers of any gas appliance, especially all the portable types where a gas bottle/can needs to be connected.
