  • Tips on steel rims for Prado 150

I am picking up some new tyres from Bob Jane this week and am considering some cheap steel rims. It is all preparation for a trip around Australia, with a little offroad included (Gibb River Rd probably).

Can anyone give some advice on steel rims to avoid, and what cheap options are decent?

I would more ask the question why you want to put steel rims on? If you're doing it because of the perceived ability to bash them back into shape if you ding them I'd say don't bother. Unless you're doing something stupid you're very unlikely to damage an alloy rim and alloys are typically lighter than steel.

If, on the other hand, you want a second pair of rims simply to put bigger/wider tyres on and steel is the cheapest option, then I've got nothing to add

Thanks Andoland for the wise advice. I was thinking about because my 4wd enthusiast friends all said "you need steel wheels when going offroad". Yesterday I read a good review of steel vs alloy on 4wdaction.com.au which busted a few myths for me. Subsequently, I have decided to stick with the alloys.

      Wish me luck!

Don't bother. Alloys are stronger. Lighter. Better.

And if you think you can bash the rims straight... Have you noticed the clearance to the brakes? Its about 2-3 mm. If you have bent the rim, you've probably stuffed either the rim or brakes. I think it would be pretty ugly.

Just picked up my 2nd spare on gumtree, brand new GXL rim with new AT20 tyre for $550 .. 4 left.. Local Toyota dealer reckons new rim only is $1200.
I'm pretty happy. As above, stick with alloys.
