Baby seat legalities question

My daughter is over visiting from Paris with our new granddaughter and has brought her Romer baby seat. She is adamant the seat alone held in place with the outer left rear seatbelt is legal here but I'm sure it needs to be attached to a base which is anchored to the car seat anchoring points. She is going by this British web site but our laws may be different. Can anyone please advise as I want to stay legal but also my granddaughter's safety is paramount.

In Australia, in addition to the seat belt, a child seat is required to have a top tether strap connected to an anchor point. Even with the implementation of laws to accept ISOFIX seats, the top tether is still required when other nations in the world do not require this.

So I would say that the seat in question is not compliant to Australian laws.

It will be illegal. Just hire one. We hired one from hire for baby. Cost us $90 for 3 months but that was 5 years ago

To be an approved child restraint, a car seat or booster must be labelled with an Australian Standards sticker for the standard AS/NZS 1754. It is one of the most stringent child restraint standards in the world. All car restraints sold in Australia must comply with the standards that cover materials, design, construction, performance, testing and labelling.

Car seats bought overseas will not comply with the Australian standard and it is illegal to use them in Australia.

Only ISOFIX restraints meeting the AS/NZS standards are legal. foreign madeones aren't.

Of course if it has the sticker and is compliant it will be legal. But I doubt it

If it doesn't have a top restraint, it won't have the sticker, won't be as safe and won't be legal.

As far as legalities go, you probably won't get a fine..... but the safety of the little one, you can't put a price on that

She reckons the same seat is available for sale here and if the Europeans are satisfied it's safe with just the car seat belt then she's happy. Unfortunately she's only in Brissy for 3 weeks and then Sydney for 2 weeks so it's not worth getting an Isofix base as she can't carry that on the plane to Sydney and then back to France. (She's struggling with what she has already) I'm going to go down to the RACQ fitting station with the seat and see what my options are. Of course the baby's safety is far more important than any legislation she may not agree with.

For me, if I am questioning the device for my little one, I wouldnt be using it. Legal or not. We were going to buy a Patrol instead of the Prado until we found out it was 3 star rated and the Prado was 5. We spent the extra cash and got the Prado. All seats I have seen have the top tether and I have have three small kids and we have seats in both our cars. I cant be arsed moving them in and out of cars.
If in doubt hire one as they are not that expensive to hire.

All sorted. I've hired one $50 for two weeks, peanuts considering a precious life at stake. Unfortunately when she goes back to France she will continue with what she's got as it's still legal what a joke, and she will be replacing it in six months with a proper Isofix todler sized one and the one she has now will be redundant. So will your baby be if you have an accident, I said. But what can you do?
