  • Caged box trailer - sydney

    Hi guys,

Will be looking for a trailer soon. Don't know much in terms to look for a quality build. I found a place in smithfield that has them at a reasonable price. Does anyone here reccomend a good supplier?

    I am after a 8x5 caged trailer.

    Thanks.

These guys are in Penrith - will cost a little more than some, but build quality is good as they make for the commercial market. They use Zinc Anneal Steel and etch prime every trailer. I was looking at them for an off-road box trailer and was impressed. But you're looking at about $1500 for an 8x5

Bit further away are these guys, but they also have a good rep: http://www.classictrailers.com.au/index.html

I've got an 8 year old Mario 6x4 box heavy duty trailer - towed very well and straight (did a Sydney>Brisbane trip with it) but the rear cross member is completely rusted through and the tail gate hinges unusable. Water got down inside where they drilled through for light wiring and not sealed the hole. TBF it was my Father in Laws and lived all its life outside, not under cover and has been neglected but I would have expected to last longer. The rest of the trailer has lasted fine.

Look for Hot Dipped Galvanised if you can find one.......Rust is the death of most trailers unfortunately and the cheapies usually die of cancer/rust pretty quickly.......They might be $500 cheaper at purchase but 5 years down the track is when you can tell you got what you paid for.........Make sure it has a decent stud pattern and bearings like Ford so you can be assured of getting replacements easily.

More than likely it will have slipper type springs.......these are fine for you average run to the dump or around town but if you intend to do any off road consider eye to eye shackle springs as the slippers do and will come out of their mounts with a bit of articulation.......believe me I've had it happen on more than one occasion with my boat trailers....

Check out the tyres on the trailer make sure they are not Chinese no names and try and find a date of manufacture on them as sometimes they are very old stock and can look new but a couple of hundred K's into your journey you find them literally falling apart........Most trailers nowadays will have LED lights which is a bonus as even the cheapies are better than the old school festoon globes.

See if it has an adjustable coupling as the non adjustable ones some times rattle and will give you the shizens in no time on a long trip.

      Can I still play now I have a 200 series?........Had a 2008 120 Series D4D Manual 6 Speed...STANDARD White, Soverign Bar..........Rear Cage........Dashmat.......GX Wheels with Good Year Dura Tracs........Bilstein/Dobbo 2'' lift.....Safari Snorkel....Canvas Seat Covers.....20%tint..........55W HID Headlights.....Mudmats front and rear.....
      22'' Lightbar......
