ALL four-wheel-drive vehicles will be banned from Territory roads from January 1, the NT News can reveal.
Chief Minister Adam Giles said the time was right to reduce the amount of traffic on - and off - Territory roads.
“For too long, roads have been clogged by four-wheel-drives in pristine condition,” he said.
“Many four-by-fours have never been driven on an unsealed road, let alone on a bona fide off-road track.
“So to protect the reputation of the four-wheel-drive, they will no longer be allowed on Territory roads.”
Mr Giles said the ban would also extend to four-wheel-drive sedans and hatches.
Four-wheel-drive owners will have until the end of January to take their vehicles to a wrecker, where they will be paid a flat $10,000 for the car.
That figure will be dropped to just $8,000 if it cannot be proven the car has been off road.
Mr Giles said this was to “penalise the pelicans ruining it for everyone” and it was “about time Territorians switched to smaller, more environmentally friendly cars”.
Funniest story I've seen all day.
