Honestly I can't see why you would need a load resistor, if you have the spot light relay coil wired across the high beam filament it should work even with the headlight bulb removed, yes you have to run two wires but it should work fine. I did see another way suggested once but the issue was if the high beam filament burnt out or insufficient current is drawn by the normal headlight then the spotties wouldn't work.
