  • In car media player for rear seat entertainment screen in Kakadu

We sometimes play DVDs for the rear seat entertainment unit.
Anybody tried one of these to expand the movie formats you can use?

I was thinking about a similar setup for my rear screens too. Seems not too badly priced!

Nope, not yet. It's easy to convert most formats to DVD video. VOB format.

We generally don't play DVD's for the kids but on really long days in the car or stuck in the tent for days with lots of rain I'm looking at one of these.

1-2 Terabytes storage. Streams up to 4 devices at once and can also be used as an internet hub. It also lets you backup from tablet back to the device - great for photos.

The only downside I can see is that the included app only lets you stream from file formats that are supported by the device itself. Eg apple would have to be mp4 etc. (You can download other apps for MKV though). Android devices support many more formats.

Of course if you aren't smartphoned or tableted up, your mileage may vary

I tried a similar unit. It does work but there is a reason they are cheap, They have slow processors resulting in a slow user interface which makes the whole setup a pain to use. The best solution I have found is to use an Android tablet or phone with an adapter cable - component video. If you have a good tablet, it is much easier to navigate stored media files and play them on the rear screen. The other issue is that they require 240v, which is ok, but the extra cables makes things messy.
