  • Caravan reversing cameras

Need to install a reversing camera on my van and car but unsure of which one to go with. I'll definitely won't be purchasing a wireless unit but unsure whether to go with the ARB unit which sits on your existing rear view mirror in the car or go a different brand which has a separate monitor for viewing. What are everyone's thoughts and experiences

What is wrong with wireless? I have a cheap -$100 ish one from J Car with a separate monitor mounted on the car and it works a treat. Almost instantaneous when reverse is selected.

      Hi Pug,

Is the camera on the car or on a van, lots of wireless ones have problems when on a van on the road ? I haven't bought the van yet, still looking, but will need one when I do as I will be a solo GN

If you need one for general view of what is behind when driving, then a Waeco is a good solution. They can be purchased through seconds shop https://www.getawaeco.com.au/index.p...&category=5406
I have a camera on back of Prado and on back of caravan.
The model I have is an old one RV250 I think it is, and it has camera 1 and camera 2 which is controlled on monitor above my radio, and gives a view like this

I have mine connected to the AV 2 on the stereo,Can view it while driving at anytime.
Very helpful when you want to see whats behind you on the road.

If you are looking to have an additional monitor, I would highly recommend this unit
            http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/350582994...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

It attaches to the rear view mirror and is quite thin. The best part is that it has a separate monitor for the reverse camera. Having it this way gives you a much better picture as opposed to the one where the monitor is part of the mirror which produces a lot of glare. I had this on the missus' car but sold it with the car.

It is on the car and you do get the occasional random picture come on as you pass a shop with a similar system but this is hardly a problem.

I have just also purchased a new Kakoda Caravan (still being built) and new Prado. I only yesterday ordered a reversing from Safety Dave who was highly recommended. I just got the camera for the rear of the van and came with all the cables necessary, dust caps, storage bag and a 7" monitor which can either be permanently mounted or temporary with suction caps. I am going to use the suction method as want to remove it when not in use. Comes with DVD instruction on how to DYI and will be doing this tomorrow in the Prado. There is some excellent YouTube clips of which cameras to buy and may be worth a look.

I'm just wondering if anyone has replaced the head unit with a Polaris in dash system for the car and caravan and how good are they and what does it look like. The only thing is it is quite pricey and it will have to be left in the car if I sold it

Would never use ARB for a reverse camera...

Check out these units. Available from Autobarn, Supercheap Auto and most car audio shops. Instead of clipping on to your existing mirror... they replace the mirror. LCD quality is great and quality of mirror is the same as the OEM mirror unlike the cheap clip on mirror quality.

I bought a wireless unit from J Car and wired the camera sender on the rear of my van to the parking lights so to use it I just switch on the parkers. The separate display with a suction cup mount lets me use it in the Prado or DMax. Have used it on several trips, great to see whats happening behind the van on the road and very helpful when backing up to trees, taps etc in parks. While I have heard of update rate issues with wireless cameras I have not experienced any issues, nor any interference issue.
