  • Mods for my 90

I recently bought a 99 prado 3.4L v6. It is stock has a factory bullbar and cheap blue streak cruise tyres which im guessing will be crap offroad.
Ive never been 4wding before and was wondering which mod/s should I be buying for my 90 series first so that I can go offroad.
Also any places near Brisbane that I could check out that doesn't have a great deal of difficulty would be handy to know.

Hey mate congrats on the 90series.

A lot of it depends on whag sort of 4x4 driving u want to do.

I do a fair bit of mud work in mine so i have.

    245/75x16 hankook mt (mud tyres).
    Snorkal.
Gearbox, diffs and transfer case breathers to stop oil getting water in them.
Other wise stock with factory bull bar for now.

To go off road you don't need to do anything, but how far and how hard you want to go off road will direct you to whatever mods you need or want

Start easy with your off roading, join a club if you are unsure, or do a 4wd course. As your skills increase and you want to push it a bit further you will work out what you want.

Decent tyres and a good 2" lift kit, combined with a snorkel and some diff, gearbox, transfer case breathers will get you through most obstacles.

      Cheers Andrew

Thanks for tips guys. I didn't want to go out 4wding in a stock vehicle and get stuck.
It seems I should be right with what I have now judging by what you have said. I will put a lift kit and tyres on my shopping list soon

Thinking a bit more about this, probably the one thing that should be first on everyone's list is a good compressor, tyre deflator and pressure gauge.

When off road (or on road for that matter) there are 3 things you need to get right, tyre pressure, wheel placement and speed / momentum. If you have those three things correct and you get stuck it means you have reached the capability of your 4wd. Wheel placement and momentum is experience, but tyre pressures need to be adjusted when off road, so look for a good compressor, tyre gauge and deflator first up.

Also take a shovel, its the number one piece of recovery equipment, if your looking at sand driving in particular I would also look at a set of Maxtrax, these are worth their weight in gold when stuck in soft sand, combined with your shovel of course.

          Cheers Andrew
