  • Friend's Hilux died

    Hey guys,

Friends Hilux died yesterday on the road while driving. Apparently it just turned off. They couldn't turn it back on.

Got the tow truck and then NRMA arrived. They don't know what it is either so I think it will be getting towed to Toyota.

    Its a 2012 Hilux SR5 Diesel.

    Any ideas?

    Did it go bang first?

Most I think go bang or a reasonable impression of that. Some have blown a puff of smoke and stopped, others lost power and then won't restart so I guess it is possible. If a diesel runs out of fuel it doesn't miss like a petrol just loses power and comes to a stop so it could be that, pump issue etc. Need more info really.

Mine smoked like a Russian hooker on a slow night. It also sounded just as bad. Just shutting down sounds more electrical???

I just recently had a similar failure on my 2012 D4D Prado, driving along then a loss of power followed by a stoppage as if it ran out of fuel. Turned out to be a 'dislodged grommet' inside the fuel tank which stopped the fuel coming through to the filter.

Was a real mission to get us out as we were on the way back from Cape York. I will be taking legal action against Toyota to recover costs and seek damages for the failure.

I think this is worth a thread on it's own (obviously once the legal action is finished as it may jeopardize your case against them).

So far I have heard it is the Fuel Sender.

The formal report from Toyota service centre included the following statement.

'Removed fuel tank, removed fuel sender unit, and inspected
Found the one way check valve forced to the outside of the housing'
