  • Euro 5 and 6 where is this leading

So at the moment we currently have the Euro 4 compliant D4D diesel motor in the 120 series. Australia only saw this as of very late 2006 which form my understanding is at least 12-18 months or more later than europe.

Should we expect to see new Diesel and petrol (euro 5 encompasses petrol from what i can gather) motors sometime before Sept 2009 or does the current crop of toyota motors meet the requirements? Also if we do expect to see new motors what timeframes apart from EU member states which will have to have them by Sept 09 do you think we will see them in other parts of the world or do you believe that toyota will push the older motors for as long as they can for commercial reasons etc to the rest of the world?

What do you believe will be the benefits apart from lower emissions. Should we expect to see better fuel economy and more power or will it be simply be emission savings alone? or are they all hand in hand?

Just interested to know people's thoughts and wondering will i be looking in a years time saying gee i wish i had waited a year to buy a new model that uses half the current fuel that my d4d does? ( i know, i know, there is always something better round the corner so just get it now and don't beat yourself up about it.)

My Wife's future shopping list includes in order a Winch (Most likely a Tigerz), Bash Plates, Rear Bar, Dual Battery setup and a 60l Fridge. And the list gets longer each time we talk about the car.

You made me do some research!
There are Euro standards in place already for petrols and diesels. Current are Euro4 for diesel and Euro3 for petrol. Have a look at the bottom of the attached page. I really dont think you'll find a huge difference overnight with anything new. Too much new investment. Instead it will be a case of lighter oils, leaner tuning and small revisions. I cant find and haven't heard of future plans set in concrete after 2010 though.

      Hi Matt,

Understand that Australia at least may not at this moment in time be running down the path of improved emissions beyond current levels but Europe is still going down this road and as such Toyota and any other manufacturer wishing to sell new vehicles will need to follow this path. Dose this then lead to Australia either 1 legislating to follow Europe or 2 we don't and hope that the manufacturers say that it is just easier to manufacture and distribute the newer engine worldwide? as it is Toyota already seem to have issues with supply and demand for the D4D motor that is used in the Prado

I hear you and I believe that we will follow european standards further. My point was more how long do you put off buying something because it will become redundant later. I thought any regrets would have been overriden by the 2-3 year wait for someting maybe better.
As for the manufacturers doing if they dont have to is a laugh. A few months ago I watched a doco on Chinas economic boom and with the steep rise in the number of middle class citizens being able to afford cars the whole system couldn't cope. There is basically no emission laws there because of such a small number of motorists only a few years ago and because of this manafacturers can sell old and out dated technology wrapped up in current shape cars. I dont meen small chinese brands either. They talked about Honda and BMW and if they are doing it I doubt Toyota wouldn't.
There will always be something new and exciting out with anything you buy. Just enjoy your car mate , while there is oil still to be burnt!
