i read an article on the myswag forum.
Apparently the guy works for Toyota and his daily drive is a Prado and tried the Fortuner.
His preference is the Prado for what it's worth.
Search the forum it should be easy to find the full post.

I actually dont mind the styling inside the Fortuner. The A/C controls look a bit cheap though...). Its identical to the new Hilux.
I had a peek inside one at a local town festival thingy.
The drivers seat seemed comfy, the model I was in had leather.
The Prado is definitely bigger inside.

i had a look at one. Didnt like the interior styling. For me the deal breaker was the 3rd row seats only fold up and cannot be removed thus taking up valuable cargo space.

Prior to release of the Fortuner I was doing allot of research and reading of reviews on the Fortuner and was set to buy one when they came out. However once I got the chance to crawl through it and drive it, then compare it to the new Prado both the wife and I lost interest in the Fortuner. IMO the Prado felt better built, far roomier and looked better both inside and out. Hence why we put a deposit on the Prado and are now eagerly waiting delivery (early Feb)...

The seats can always be taken out. Just depends how much trouble you want to go to!

Was really interested at comparing both and after test driving and crawling through both, the prado was only way to go.
The inside space was what turned me away, the prado was just so much more roomy.

this would be the deal breaker for me as well.
the model the family have overseas has the fold down type.
                earlier model not Hilux based.

Part time 4wd makes it a no go for me. Prefer the AWD, don't have to think too much, just drive!!

Would be good if Toyota did a transfer case similar to Mitsubishi.

Yes - thanks retroenduro, the 150l tant is of course a big advantage.
Thanks to all who replied with your thoughts. Looks like I will be sticking with the Prado!

I had a look at Toyota Fortuner when at the Toyota dealer an it was very small inside when it comes to the space for passengers. Only 1 above average height adult fits in comfort (in the drivers seat). Passenger seat and rear seat do not have enough space. Also does not have cargo area tonneau cover like Prado so chance of a thief break-in in Sydney high if you have anything in the boot. Someone on a shorter side with only 2 kids will find it very nice inside but for the rest it may be not enough space.

Other negatives - lacks full time 4wd and has small fuel tank. Not sure why this car was launched - Prado kills it in every aspect. They could have done a better job.

Would be better if Toyota invested money in a new version of Toyota FJ Cruiser.

You get alot more comfort with the prado for the money imo

Fortuner - first version not a bad effort
                            Look at the Prado evolution
Some my say it has become to softBut i do like the comfort of the 150

Looked at both - I was actually waiting for the new Hilux and Fortuner to come out before I made up my mind
Never drove the hilux - better half decided she didn't want another dual cab ute

The brown interior of the Fortuner we looked at was ugly as hell. Nothing amazing about the Prado interior.

In my opinion, the Fortuner had a few good features - for example rear diff lock. Prado fuel capacity is handy.

Fortuner drove fine - Prado drove better - more comfortable.
                              Prado felt much bigger internally.

Fortuner is built in Thailand, Prado in Japan.
Coming from another Thai built ute, I feel you can see the difference.

Compared to my old ute, the Prado is an entirely different class of vehicle.

In the end, happy we went with the Prado.
