There are pros and cons for each. Importantly though, the complete lack of grunt in the D4D and new 2.8 whatever it is turn me off too. Both struggle to tow a zimmerframe downhill. If there was a v6 turbo diesel Prado/fortuner/hilolux or whatever I would buy it no matter how bad it looks, but alas there is not and thankfully I am now too old to have to worry about fuel prices and litres per kilometre (yes I know).

Thats what I'm thinking, low milage second hand one when the Prado ready to be moved on. Although there will most likely be a 300 thats too expensive by then too!!

Don't totally agree here the engine is great I find that its the 6 speed auto that makes it feel bad. Theres plenty of power just seams to be wasted in converter drive rather than locked up!

Ditto. My D4D loves to tow our 2T ish camper not a sweat. Cruises at 100kms only using 12L/100 and 'allegedly' no problems overtaking at up to 140km...

I recently added a Steinbauer and highflow muffler to my 3l, as well as previous sound deadening on the firewall and under the intake guard. Has made a big difference to the vehicle. When I test drove the 2.8l I really couldn't feel or see a reason to change. Would like a 200 series for towing but can't really justify it for my sub 2t camper and the new front end on the 200 has really put me off.

I never realised this would turn into such a discussion...

The 3L D4D goes alright. No issues...its not a race car...but for a 2.5t vehicle, it goes well.
Agree that the next prado should have V6 TD...how good would that be??? Though, I think Toyota, like most car manufacturers, are moving towards smaller motors with bigger turbos.
I'd love a TD V8, but the budget wouldn't accommodate it and the increased fuel bill...

Take away - if you're reading this Mr Toyota Design Engineer...Turbo Diesel V6 in the Prado from now on! Or at least the option to spec up to the V6...

                    i agree !!
and up the towing and or carrying capacity
look at what we are all doing and using them for

why give us the smallest option,
Prado needs to have 6 cylinder turbo 6 or 8 sp auto or 6sp manual, be 100mm longer tow rating of 3T
increase the rear ramp over angle
have the option to use low range in 2wd in the manual
fit factory diff lock and have traction control on the front wheels when lock is activated

then i would update my 120

Don't all Prado have constant 4wd with an option of centre diff lock?

They are constant with a centre diff lock, rear diff lock is Std on Kakadu (but not optional on any other model stupidly).

i find mine has a too tall a first gear to get the boat out of the water
so i use low 4 just driving straight up to the top then change to reg position high constant

or even have low 4 without the centre diff lock (push button centre diff lock instead of the lever lock)

If I had the $$$ I'd have a 200 over any model Prado. Having just driven both the Sahara (neighbours) and my wife's uncles 4 week old vx 200, I was in heaven lol didn't want to get out of either of them. Loooved the Sahara features including the air conditioned seats (cool or heat). The power !!!! Love love the up n go. No more oil problems I believe, a lot of chrome on the Sahara and vx. Wife's uncle paid $94 for the vx diesel. I'd be happy with the petrol. At least I could afford a second hand one of them lol. Each to there own, but yes a 200 would be a tight fit with some of the tracks I've been on with my 120. I've got some battle scars. Couldn't imagine doing that to a 80k plus vehicle. We have a contractor who comes into my work who uses his 200 for courier work carting 20L bottles of acid, you could imagine the state of it. 3 years old looks like it's 20+ years old. Totally screwed both in n out. But did tell me he services it every 10 😳😳
