  • A horror story I'd like to share

So, I was talking to one of the missus' friends other half not too long ago and he used to own a KUN26 Hilux. As it always does when someone finds out you're a mechanic the talk always gets around to cars....... So he tells me how his Hilux just randomly died one day, seized the engine the mechanic said. His mechanic had never seen this happen before and went about replacing the engine with one from the wreckers. All good so far I guess. About 2 mths after getting it back it starts running rough and blowing smoke so he takes it back to the same mechanic. This mechanic refers it to diesel specialist because he suspects an injector failure. Yep, you guessed it, injector failure and a cracked piston (he couldn't tell me which one). So he goes back to original mechanic with a quote to fix from the specialist. Original mechanic says not his problem, he reused the old injectors from his original motor!!! Apparently he didn't have a computer to recode the injectors so he just swapped them over!!! Long story short he ended up getting the specialist to put another wrecker motor complete with wrecker injectors in it (cheapest fix possible) and trading it in on a Triton. Needless to say he found himself a new mechanic. All I could do was look at him with a dumbfounded look on my face, what else can a bloke do?

It's the same in any industry. Unless you know something about it yourself you obviously take the advise of the so called professional. I work in IT and the amateur stuff I see amazes me. Every Tom, Dick and Harry thinks just because they can turn a computer on they're an expert.
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

hee hee that can be so true - not long after I first started in i.t. (late 80s I worked for a 'bureau' (outsourcer) and myself and a junior went out to a client site to look at issues they were having. the supervisor (gove dept) made a big show of being the man' and ordered us into his office to 'discuss issues' he wasn't happy about. after we sat down he strutted around his office bragging about having 'a lot of experience' and being 'qualified' in i.t., eventually he sat down behind his desk where we saw - loved it - a framed certificate of attendance titled "Introduction to MS/DOS"

Ironically, you need to be qualified to be a hairdressor or a mechanic. But you don't need ANY qualifications to be in IT I guess cutting someone's hair badly is much worse than accidentally shutting down a major IT system!

Back to talking about cars ... anyone having an issue with the 2nd hand Hilux they purchased!

I must be a bit strange then...

When I was running a major national IT system, I wouldn't let anyone touch it who didn't have qualifications...

There's a lot of untrained 'experts' out there, they are not the type who should be given the keys to a national computer system.

I got out of IT because it was unregulated. Too many parochial cowboys who know jack sh_t. Everybody in that industry wants to be the hero. I jumped into a regulated industry where there are lots of cowboys who also know jack sh_t, but at least they're not parochial

We have a customer that pays us OT to go in on a Saturday to audit their patching then rip the lot out and repatch with correct length leads etc. we have done two Comms rooms twice over 3 years because it ends up like a dogs breakfast from the IT guys do adds, moves, changes.

Can you go to your network box they say. Look for the blue cable they say. It should have a little flashing light next to it they say. Can you follow that blue cable through the wall to where your PC is they say. There's four boxes in here I say. Which blue cable, there's a dozen cables per box I say. The cables go up in to the roof I say. Yes, IT support via the 1800 number. It's great.

Yeah, there is IT & then there is IT too.

Anyone can sit behind a desk & tell you how to turn your PC off and on again & call themselves an "expert" without qualifications.
Not everyone can plan & implement major network infrastructure without qualifications.

I went to Toyotaways today to pick up the new alternator upper retaining bolt and then showed them the old bolt and the stuffed thread in the compressor/alternator bracket. The mechanic had a look and suggested that somebody had used a rattle gun and over tightened the bolt. I said that would have been TOYOTA when they rebuilt my engine when installing the short motor. He just gave me this dumb look. He then said I could probaly fix it by tapping the thread again. Thankyou, I'll give that a go. No offer to help - typical.
