Hi guys,
I got my 2011 Prado (150 3.0TD) a week ago and have noticed a change in sound after a little 4WDing.
Previously when accelerating you could hear the turbo spool up/whine as expected under power, when you take your foot off the accelerator the you hear the whine promptly fade. All good.
The other day I hit a few 4WD tracks for the first time. The truck is stock too BTW.
After leaving the tracks I noticed a new sound, it sounds like a gentle whistling, not a sharp piercing whistle, almost like blowing into a metal pipe to get that acoustic type sound if you know what I mean.
No sound when stationary or rolling, only under power, doesn't build the same as the turbo though either, more like when you press the gas there is a brief build up then constant gentle whistle. And the normal turbo spool up sound seems diminished now.
The only thing of note from the 4WD tracks is I did bottom out once going over a hard-packed dirt mound. Wasn't going fast, hit the brakes the second it hit and reversed out, didn't push through. Didn't scrape on the way back either so hadn't gone far. I'm no expert but doesn't seem to me like a serious thump. May have nothing to do with anything but that's the only thing of note I can think of so I'm mentioning it.
First thought with change of sound is something between turbo and engine leaking air, but performance feels the same. There is no appreciable drop in performance/acceleration which I'd assume would be obviously if you were bleeding air before the engine?
Contact point under the chassis when bottoming out was also about 2 feet behind the front wheels, so plenty of distance from everything engine/intake related?
Could the exhaust system have a puncture?
Or could an impact on the exhaust have pushed forward to the extractors and that area?
I could be pointing in the wrong direction here with uneducated guesses above so don't limit suggestions to those areas.
Thoughts?
Many thanks.
