  • Floor mats. Beware.

Mum was over and she has a nice Lexus i200 sports. Totally wasted on her as a 70 yo driver who looks a few feet beyond her bonnet. I always drive the car if we go out as I get too nervous.

Anyway we were stopped waiting at an interesection and talking about the heated seats buttons and next to them is the TRC traction control button. She clearly wasn't sure what it did, so I said I'd show her. I switched it off, and being a wet road gave it some right foot. Slight wheel spin, purpose achieved, but then the motor kept revving. I had to brake to stop the car. Into neutral, still revving. Ignition off, hazards on. Thinking carefully, then I restarted and Then all was normal. I was perplexed, but the destination was a block away and the car drove normally to there. I kept thinking what had happened, and if I'd done an old man mistake accelerator for brake thing, or there was a fault in the system.

Anyway we drove back to our place the next day and I tried to replicate it in the drive and on the lawn, but I couldn't despite leaving skid marks on the lawn.... Then I thought I'd give it one last shot and floor it. I jumped on the brakes and the engine kept revving. I shut it down, then went to start it again and it revved up. Puzzled, then I felt the accelerator pedal down. At least the revving was solved. Then I noticed the factory floor mat was moved forward and the tail of the accelerator pedal was caught under it.

It hadn't been a problem in normal driving, just when I put foot to the floor. Fortunately it had been wet so I wasn't likely to do it in normal driving, otherwise it would have been interesting to say the least if it had been whilst we were at speed and I'd floored it to overtake a truck....

There are two hooks that hold the mat in place that were loose, allowing the mat to move.

    Beware the floor mat.

I'll tell mum to ditch the mat.

Nasty business! Can you tell me does the accelerator come up from the floor or down from under the dash (as in the Prado). I assume up from the floor if the mat jams it forward.

I had after market mats in the Prado when it was serviced and Toyo put them in a bag and said wrong ones as no hole for clips.

Extra large very useful bag though

A well recognised problem with aftermarket floor mats interfering with accelerator or brake pedals on various cars over the years etc, but not so common with genuine mats , if indeed they are genuine mats and not aftermarket mats fitted by the dealer perhaps...might be worth double checking if they are indeed genuine mats with genuine clips or mat restraints.

@ brogers: The car was an ex demo model when they bought it. The mats have Lexus written on them, I don't know when they were fitted. There are hooks but they had spun around and the mat pushed forward off them so it was loose as I drove it.

@ozimacca: the accelerator comes down from above - it was the tail of the accelerator that got caught behind the mat, but only when it was floored - which mum was never likely to do.
