  • Ok, fes up. Is it you?

Take a look at this clip obviously taken in Perth somewhere. Pretty sure it is a Prado towing the caravan. Correct me if I'm wrong. Very dangerous and lucky to get out of it anyway.

This is not as dumb as it looks, this exact thing happend to me tonight, although I didn't get stuck.

I turned right from a T intersection (same scenario only I turned to the right from the otherside of the road headed in the same direction as the prado was in the video). when I had made the turn and proceeded over the tracks I saw that the lights were going with no bells! I couldn't see the lights until I was straight onto them!

Just goes to show you can't always trust the warnings at level crossings.

While the vid of the Prado and van getting stuck was quite scary .... it is so easy to do at this particular intersection. You spend most of your time checking for oncoming cars racing down the hill ..... that when you finally get to take off you can easilly get caught out by boom gates that drop quickly .... often without you having been able to see the flashing lights.

What worried me even more was the second vid in the list ..... the one where the kids vandalise the bus ... then one jumps from the bus while its still doing 60 km/hr and winds up in hospital. His mates jumped out after the bus had slowed down .... saw him crumpled in a heap on the road ... and left him there while they ran off.

They are also students from my school .... and I recognised them straight away  ..... and YES .... Crime Stoppers now knows who they are. 8)

Thanks for the link John .... I wouldn't have seen the vid otherwise.

          Cheers

              Chippy,

Must have been hard for you to see that video of the students you know. Afraid there is to much of this going on in the world now. We can only hope some good does come out of it by other kids seeing it.

Could you please tell me where that rail crossing is. I assuming it's along the Freo line somewhere.

                Hi John

Part of the news story that went with that video was referring to the Oates Street crossing in Carlisle ..... at the base of the hill, just next to the old Carlisle Tech.

I haven't been out that way for a few years ... but the intersection looks very much like the one I'm thinking of ..... and the streets running parallel to the railway line turn into Oates Street, and the level crossing, with bugger all room to move.

                Cheers

Well done Chippy or should we say the Pink Panther

Road crossings are something that the government does not seem interested in fixing but this is what can happen.

Ouch ..... that truck (or, at least, the parts that can still be identified as a truck) are looking decidedly second hand.

Yikes! But what the heck do you do if the boom gets stuck in between the caravan and the car?? Obviously the boom gates are set to go back up if they're given any stick.

We were stuck at some malfunctioning boom gates near Bells Rapids in Brigadoon at the weekend. Which is a great spot by the way 8). We pulled up behind a line of 10 or so cars waiting patiently behind boom gates and flashing lights. No bells though :?. Waited a good 10 minutes but no train arrived, although I know a few had been past a few minutes before as we could see them from the picnic site next to the "rapids". We pulled over onto the side of the road and watched people maneuver between the boom gates and on their merry way. 4 demerit points right there apparently now. Considering my luck where demerit points are concerned we decided not to risk it. Although a lot of people were doing it. Can't say I blame them but they essentially had no warning that a train was coming.

What would would you guys do??

Yeah Chippy, I think its the one near Carlisle Tech. Its a very big crossing if I remember from my Tech days as a country kid. (20 yrs ago)

I seem to recall doing something similar, as if there are traffic lights across the other side, and they can be a bit distracting as well???

There are a couple along the Freo line as well that could also catch people out.

Had a fair bit to do with this one over the years.

In Qld there are not audible alarms at every crossing. Usually only where pedestrians are at risk, and they are too tight to put in proper pedestrian crossings, including pedestrian gates. Its all $$$$$

Where audible alarms are installed, they have timers on them which can either quiet them down lots of decibells or turn them off altogether so the local residents can sleep at night. The local autority has reduced the maintenance visits on these sites recently where small things like timers keeping correct time were corrected.

As for the boom gates, Qld has a time limit minimum of 28 seconds between the lights starting to flash and the train crossing the intersection. Time limit consists of 8 seconds lights flashing, 10 secs for the booms to descend and 10 seconds in the horizontal position before the arrival of the train. Lights flash all that time.

Being involved in this industry in a previous lifetime, I got to see many fatalities, injuries and near misses. One of the last ones I saw the ford F250 was hit by a train going only 20KM, at a level crossing and dragged 111 Metres. He lived!!!

I think that crossing is the royal st crossing in Kenwick.
That and the one on Welshpool Rd are the only two in Perth at the moment with cameras.
