  • PVC vs Canvas annexe/awning

    Hiya

Did a search and could not find the answers...

I have a 2nd hand Goldstream Sovereign Offroad camper van with a "factory" PVC awning. I am wanting to add walls to this setup - and am wondering whether a new full canvas annexe (with removable walls) is better (breathing, durability etc) than sticking canvas walls to the existing PVC awning.

considerations - condensation is worse for PVC, PVC can be hotter inside the awning - but is already attached and thus more convenient and cheaper than a new canvas one. Canvas is "traditional", maybe more durable - but takes more time in setting up and has more poles etc. Full canvas one is generally self supported with poles but the PVC awning/canvas walls is semi reliant on the van holding the roof up (no poles at side of van).

Anyone experienced the different types and have an appreciation of what is best?

Im wanting to do something soon so need help in making a decision!

IMHO good quality cotton canvas still beats PVC and other plastics hands down - just make sure you get it from a good source eg Southern Cross Canvas.
It breathes, folds up easier into a smaller package and doesn't make as much "flapping" noise when erected.
You do need to make sure it is properly dried out before storing it, otherwise it will mould and rot in the bag.
The real good quality canvas is probably 2-3 times more expensive than PVC but will give many more years of service if looked after.
There are sealing liquids available if it leaks from the seams etc but you shouldn't need it.
      Cheers, Wayne
