  • Brown Davis Guards

Any body used one of these and what are their thoughts on the product. I want one for my 90 series, Are they easy to install ?? If any body does have one, looking at the product would it be easy enough for me to have one made up (can get made at work if need be) I havnt seen one myself so not sure what/how difficult it would be to make one or not worth the hassle and just get one from brown davis. Have read about them for navara's and a few people complained about the product not lining up with original holes already in vehicle and ended having to modify them selves to fit properly. If some one has one fitted any chance they could take a few pics for me and email to me so I can see what would be involved Regards Steve M

              Re: Brown Davis Guards

ive got one on my 120. good investment imo. fitted it myself and wasn't any big deal. the rear holes didn't line up by about 5 mm so I had to redrill so the holes now look like figure 8's which is a bit annoying since it probably has a bit of movement now. havent had any problems from it though. has saved the undercarriage a few times from bumps and also when sliding through ruts. I see you're in Sydney- if you end up buying one, get it straight from BD and not from a reseller in brookvale.

I have one on my prado, fitted up really well & looks good too. I haven't used it in anger yet, so I can't really tell exactly how strong it is, but its thicker and covers more then the standard bash plate.

                  Re: Brown Davis Guards

I have just had one fitted (and customised) by a 4wd modification crew in Brisbane Southern Suburbs on my 120series. I wasn't allowed to fit mine, my wife still gives me 40 questions when I walk around the house with even a screw driver in my hand... (One of her first questions is always "How much is it going to cost to get in a tradesman when you f*** this up?" Harsh. Harsh but fair, unfortunately.)

I haven't used mine in anger yet, it was installed in preparation of my Father-In-Law's trip to Birdsville (He's taking our Prado and camper trailer) for the races. I have since been invited to join them!

They look amazing and I wished I'd have had this on when my wife, new to 4wding, thumped the car down onto a rock and split both the air conditioner condensor and radiator, leaving us stranded in Stanthorpe. It certainly will give us piece of mind when off road, much more effective than the tissue thin plates Toyota put on as standard...

                      Re: Brown Davis Guards

I've had the BD bashplate for nearly 2 years and I have already panel beated the front bottom due to a mishap with an unmovable rock that wouldn't get out of my way. Without the DB bashplate, I certainly would have had radiator or possible steering component damage. So it paid for itself and I can't be happier with it's strength.

I also made it easier to do a service by cutting a holie for the oil drainage. Im not sure if they have made this small mod.

I have also thought about Snaga's comment regarding the bolts that stick out. One of mine got caught and subsequently bent slightly. I was thinking of replacing the bolts with allen key type bolts that have a small area of contact from underneath. The only concern is if any gunk was in the allen key hole or any slight damage to it, it would make it harder for me to remove if I needed to.

All the same, I am very happy with the BD bashplate.

                        Re: Brown Davis Guards

Regarding the allen key type bolts (inhex) and having been there dun that, if they get a hard enough hit, another problem that can occur is the bolt head will deform enough to not allow the allen key to be used meaning the only other option is to use a set of vice grips.

6 of one and 1/2 dozen of the other I guess as both come with good points and bad.

                            Re: Brown Davis Guards

Definately going to get a guard, I have thought about the oil hole drain issue   and will cut a hole through the plate big enough for a socket/spanner and enough to get my fingers up there   and allow oil to flow out when changing it, then will drill two holes and weld two nuts in place behind the brown davis plate then make a plate up same thickness plate but over lap the hole by a centimetre or two, drill two holes through the smaller plate so I can put two bolts through that into the nuts welded in place so will allow me easier access for changing the oil when I do it every 5k that way the sump is still protected  and save me dropping the brown davis plate everytime I have to do an oil change  . Will also add some weld around the extra bolts I put in to protect them from getting ground down and hard to replace, even if I didnt do that wouldnt be a major issue as I could remove the brown davis plate and get some vice grips to undo the bolts from the other side ........Regards Steve M

                              Re: Brown Davis Guards

Just got a price for the under body guard for the prado $397   Bit over the top I thought at first but when you look at all the bends and and things of how the guard is made up I suppose its not to bad. Is cheaper to buy here in Sydney, You cant buy direct from brown davis anymore if you live in Sydney as they have a contract with the mob in Brookvale to sell from there. Just waiting for them to get back to me to see how much it will be to get courier'd to my house instead of me driving over to Brookvale, tolls diesel etc might be cheaper for them to send it to me. Going to see if I can get my mate to buy it through his workshop should get it for trade price ?? or at least a bit off it........... Regards Steve M
