    Toyota Hilux Recall.

    Got this info today.

Toyota recalls 116,507 cars on safety risk
From theage.driveSeptember 08, 2010In another blow to its reputation Toyota has been forced to issue the biggest vehicle recall of 2010.

In the biggest vehicle recall in Australia this year - and one of the biggest ever conducted here - Toyota has been forced to recall its top-selling HiLux ute.

The recall, which involves 116,507 vehicles, is yet another blow to Toyota's reputation for quality, which is still reeling from recalls affecting more than 10 million vehicles overseas.

All up more than 200,000 utes have been recalled in Australia this year, which is more than double the amount that have been sold for the first eight months of the year.

The HiLux is the second best-selling vehicle in Australia (behind the Holden Commodore) but its reputation for ruggedness and reliability has been dealt a blow by the massive recall to repair a potentially faulty bracket on the drive shaft of four-wheel-drive models built between January 2005 and February 2010.

The recall of petrol and diesel HiLux models is only being conducted in Australia following 19 failures that left the cars potentially stranded and driving only two wheels.

Toyota says the failures have only occurred in rugged conditions and during extreme driving.

"In remote areas in the vehicle is frequently driven at hard acceleration on rough roads that feature conditions such as severe corrugations or high numbers of cattle grid crossings the rear tailshaft centre bearing support brackets may give way," says Toyota Australia media and communications manager Laura Hill.

"This is a rare event, with only 19 cases reported in Australia, however all affected HiLux customers will have their vehicle inspected and repaired free of charge."

The repair involves checking the tailshaft bracket for damage and generally takes about three hours, although cars with more damage could also require replacement of the cross member.

The recall is the largest of its type in Australia this year, eclipsing recalls involving 42,525 Mitsubishi Triton utes, 34,432 Holden Commodore Utes and 30,465 Ford Ranger utes.

The Ranger recall was only announced today to repair a bonnet striker that could lead to the bonnet opening while driving.

The latest HiLux recall is the biggest for Toyota Australia recently, but the company is adamant its is putting customers first.

"Toyota Australia continues to focus on quality as a major priority," says Hill. "Our customers can be assured we will always place customer safety and service first."

toyota kept it quiet until yesterday when the release was put up.
safety needs to be number 1, so what ever the cost they need to do it.

        Re: Toyota Hilux Recall

The "unbreakable" Hi-Lux seems to be symptomatic of a general fall in Toyota quality control in the vehicles they are building. My mechanic told me that the new Hi-Luxes just aren't built as well anymore and I'd have to agree. Having driven the older and now a late model Hi-Lux, I've seen plastic fittings in the cabin break, a clutch on the way out at 50K, faulty ABS sensors and now this tail-shaft bracket recall. None of this happened on the older Lux and it had a ton of kays on it. I'm a big fan of Toyota but it just isn't good enough given customers pay a premium price for the Toyota product :x

          Re: Toyota Hilux Recall

I have to agree with OFFroader. My current 09 120 V6 is nowhere near to quality of my previous 03 120 V6. I've had more issues in the current 25,000ks than in the previous 257,000ks. Unless Toyota "picks up the ball" with their builds and warrenty claims/issues, this will be the last Toyota I'll buy. It's a shame, I do like the brand, but I'm also not putting up with these issues, for these prices.
IMO Toyota needs to do something "big" to recapture their reputation of a quality vehicle. Perhaps they should extend all their warrenties to 5 years to show customer support?

            Re: Toyota Hilux Recall

Was talking to local Toyota Dealer about another issue, and asked if I could drop in the Hilux next week, but it appears they wont start getting the recall kits until about 28th Sept

I have driven 2 x New Gen Hilux utes about 250k in 2 over last 5 years, and while I consider it a great vehicle to drive, I still struggle to think of it as a real 4x4. Yes it gets me around the minesite ok, but when the going gets tough, it just feels like something is about to let go. (Clutch mostly). Part of it is that the diffs are too tall for a ute, which is ok if you want to do 170 kmh, but have to be really careful in the soft sand.

Then I jump in my 2001 model at home (255k), and while it wont do 170 kmh, I feel quite confident it will get me anywhere.
            Cheers
