Well I've talked the mrs into allowing me to get myself a hydraulic press for the garage.
I'm still to do a bit of research on what is out there but after getting a quote from Toyota for suspension bushes and other jobs that need a press, I can justify it I recon.
The press will be for home use only so no need for a super duper model, but something that can stand the test of time is preferable.

I'm guna also have a look around for a porta power type kit that has a stand to convert it to a press as this I think will be far more versatile.

Any suggestions or ideas on what is out there, what to get or what prices I should be paying would be great.

I can't offer any advise as to what to get, its just coincidental that today i decided a press would be the next addition to my workshop as well. I will probably build my own though as i already a long stroke jack that i can use and a bit of steel that will make a good start. would be interested to know what you find and and what sort of dollars though.

I've designed/built two over the years. One manual using spare bits and pieces off agricultural machinery (50t) and the other electric built from enerpac bits and pieces (250t). Just make sure you design it for the loads it will be subjected to and if you are going to press bearings have a cage that can swing around the press ram. You can make the frame easily enough out of parallel flange channel and box (RHS). The 250t press used 350 channel for the top and bed so don't skimp on materials.

After a bit of web surfing and visiting local tool stores and such I have come up with a few options rangeing from a $140 SCA press (6 tonne) to a $500 Kingcrome press (20 tonne). and all points in between and further if I want.

I don't think 6 tonne will cut the mustard in some cases and for my use at home a 12 tonne will be the best option considering cost -v- amount of use and what I can use it for. For $250 delivered to my door (a kingcrome branded one) from a local supplier I may go with that.

Is there honestly anything you can't do mate? The press looks good!

Had thought of building something myself once upon a time - need to revisit my welding practice and at it to my list of things i don't need again!

Making stuff like this is easy as for me. My current pastime at work is welding a Caterpillar dump truck back together that has broken the chassis, but sending a text message, I have NFI how to do that.

hare and forbes 20 tonne $350 just bought one myself goes well as the head slides left and right across the unit which is very handy for the price wont find better, unless of course your handy with a welder ;o)
