  • Which line to take?

This image was recently posted under the trip reports, and I thought it would be a good one to get everyones opinion on the best or safest line to take to get up the hill.

Feel free to use MS Paint, Photoshop or whatever to make it clear

It looks like the right hand side is the path most travelled :?:

The green section would be where I'd stack rocks. Moreso for the left hand wheel.

What do you think :?: ops:

as we've worked out, pictures don't give it justice so without knowing how steep, or how high the rock steps are... i'd probably take a similar line to the one you marked out Bensen...

although i'd hug as far left as possible to at least keep the left wheels on the ground, put the passenger corner of the nose up against that tree on the left, then switch heading towards the right as you've done.

agreed, without any doubt, avoiding the two broken rock area's would be my priority
why would you want lockers for that, they are just some simple steps that need clearance and vehicle positioning IMO

Interesting idea for a thread. Seeing this obstacle first hand yesterday I can definitely state that the photo doesn't reveal the true complexity of the climb.

The left side of the track isn't an option in a normal vehicle, the rock steps were just too severe, that said there were wheel tracks there, but they could have only been made by a very short wheelbase heavily modified rockcrawler or a mad Suzuki.

The right hand side would be the way up, but there was a rock close to the top right in the middle of where your wheel track would have gone, that would've been a potential sump-buster. The strategic placement of rocks would be the only way I'd attempt this climb, most likely diff locks would be needed also. Camo wants to go back and tackle this another time. It's the sort of track I'd have to think long and hard about before attempting.

There is no substitute for walking a track with your arms out showing where your wheel placement is.

BTW, you've seen nothing yet, you should have seen the hill climb further up this track.

          Cheers all,

          Drew.

i looked at it and though, doesn't look that difficult!

I couldn't agree more Drew, to look at a photo and say doesn't look too difficult and then be faced with it in the flesh is different. I pulled in at Fremmans Waterhole on the way out for a dunny stop and two young blokes pulled in to air up their tyres. One was a hilux and the other a patrol ute and both were wearing big 35" muddies and were lifted at a guess around 5-7 inches, totally awsome and listening to the way they were chatting, it wasn't hard to think that they had been through where we were halted.
I would need some (a lot of) dutch courage to attempt it in my current configuration and would be conscious of body damage even with lockers.

                  Re: Which line to take?

Unless you have walked the track, checked it out from all angles, you would never really know how to traverse it just by looking at a photograph. Maybe even a spotter can help out if not so sure.
