its not wise to head out 4wding if you do not have any experience or limited experience, it is a good idea to go and do some driver training with a 4wd club or training company otherwise it can get expensive if you get get stuck badly or worse drowned your vehicle. cheers samo

I did a good 4wd course down Geelong way which was great. Can't for the life of me remember what it was though

samo's advice is still good however.
If I were you I'd go down to thel ocal 4WD Club, even if you don't like the club thing, you can still ask them about best tracks for a learner, even go out on a drive with them ( best way to learn )
People on this forum probably don't want to name tracks, because with all the rain we've had, normally safe tracks could have become boggy, slippery traps ( especially around the Otways )
            Cheers, Wayne

I'm not from Mel or Geelong (so I don't really know the area very well) but on the way from ADL to MEL, I stopped by Ararat Hills Regional Park for a bit of fun.

If you go around this time of the year, the trees are still green and its nice there. It's just too hot and dry in the summer time. Not sure how muddy it will be from the rain.

Apparently there are some track on Great Ocean Road too. viewtopic.php?f=26&t=8447#p115277

Take it easy and do as much reading as you can to gain theoretical experience.

Although like you Wazza78 i too am still fairly new(18 months) into this fun recreation and also thought i would go by myself but common sense from other friends was the better choice. Most Clubs will (generally) have a greater understanding of the areas you wish to explore plus as others have said will give you the advise and training needed to get into and out of.Also if you go by yourself and do get stuck it is a real pain in the rear to try a self recovery especially when you are in the heat of the moment...
