  • Auto change delay

My new Prado 150 GX auto diesel tends to have a delay on gear change when easing off the re-accelerating, usualy in roudabouts and cornering.
Has anyone else had this, I am getting used to it but a pain when towing my van
I have now travelled 23000kms and other than the above can't fault it.

    Re: Auto change delay

Is it getting whorse or slower?
All auto's are a bit slow on kickdown i think the auto is alot faster and smarter than the 4 speed auto in by BA XR6.

Second half of this thread discusses this issue.

Bottom line is all 150 Diesel Autos have it and no one has been able to fix it.

Its a pain in the ass

        Re: Auto change delay

        This is odd....

I drove a 2010 4.0L hilux 2wd auto today & I found the same symptoms.....it was very odd as i was comparing it to my Auto Diesel 90 series....

When turning at a roundabout & taking the third exit i.e. making a right turn effectively you would accelerate as you exit & nothing would happen so you would push the accelerator more then after the fixed delay time it would eventually accelerate & if you pushed the accelerator hard, it would accelerate hard....

A little disconcerting & to me makes the car less nice to drive unless you like to potter around.....you simply cannot 'enjoy' driving like that....its a bit like you don't feel in control & you feel separated from the car...its like you are requesting acceleration & its saying OK he wants to go faster, first lets see if that's what I want to do!

My Diesel is very 'keen' on the throttle & responds immediately but of course it doesn't have any traction control if that in fact is the issue...

It could simply be that the gearbox tells the engine control "Oh by the way I need to change gear so don't accelerate until I've selected the right one..."

You will notice on a "normal" car, it will accelerate immediately but in the taller gear before working out it needs to change down - perhaps Toyota have "smartened" this process up?

        Cheers

          Re: Auto change delay

How about if you just adjust the kickdown on the auto (if you still can).
I do this on all my autos, helps it move on alot quicker, especally since the Prado now weighs in at around 2.8 tonnes.

            Re: Auto change delay

No I don't think its the kickdown since there is no throttle response at all from the engine even if the throttle is pushed hard. After perhaps 1/4 of a second then the engine responds...

              Re: Auto change delay

Wonder if its some thing to do with the fly by wire for the throttle ?? I know my 90 series turbo diesel has fly by wire and is auto, havnt suffered any delay syptoms. I dont think any of the autos have a kcik back cable anymore, all computer controlled. I know when I had my statesman I adjusted the kick down cable to make it more responsive but when we bought our VX new I couldnt do anything with it, computer controlled. Will have to have a drive of my neighbours 150 and see if I notice anything. I thought toyota had a reflash for the 150's due to the problem ?? I know they have a reflash for the 200 series cruiser regarding 6th gear..Regards Steve
