Re: Washing car with bore water?

Not too sure about bore water, but due to water restrictions, I wash mine with rain water. I then use a bucket of tap water to wipe down the car before going over it with the chamois.

Here's a thread on other people using bore water to wash their cars... http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1130837 Doesn't seem to be an issue...

      Washing car with bore water?

It will wreck the paint. My wifes car got covered in bore water by a sprinkler at a friends farm and we had to have the whole paint protection film removed, the car cut and polished and then the paint protection reinstalled. I would definitely not wash my car in bore water.

Apparently bore water is different from place to place. Its the first time I've heard of such severe damage caused by using bore water. RT, maybe you should play it safe and take it to the car wash or be cheeky and use regular tap water...

Get it tested at the local pool place, they can tell you if it's salty or alkaline/acidic and it's comparison to tap water.

We have a bore and I know it's a bit alkaline so just use normal tap water

Thanks all, it's was only a temp option but I think I will leave it for now and not use the bore water.

they tested the bore water on moreton island years ago, it was said that you were better off washing your car in the salt water than to use the bore water. its full of minerals

The bore water on Stradbroke is the one I'm questioning. Alot of people over there seem to wash their car with it.

I ended up washing underneath with the bore water but made sure no overspray got onto the paint. Surely it is better then leaving underneath caked with salt/sand/mud.

Re: Washing car with bore water?

Completely depends upon the bore from which the water is coming from.

All bores have different levels of salinity which is what most people associate with bore water being detrimental to paint, although other chemicals/ minerals can have an impact.

I just have the mindset that washing your car with unknown bore water is like washing it with sea water, (extreme, but I prefer to be safe). If you aren't sure on that specific bore, use it to get mud off if you have to, but like after you launch a boat, give the car a good wash down with what you know is safe water to get it all off again.

Having said that, if the bore is frequently being used, chances are it has a relatively low salinity content, as they aren't that great otherwise. If it does have some salt in it, you can let a small patch of it dry on the paintwork/ glass and you should see a slightly stronger watermark after it dries compared to regular rainwater/ mains water.

I usually give my car a spray-down at the local town's car wash before I head home. It's just so much easier getting off fresh mud than mud that has been given a 6 hour blow dry to concrete-like hardness. I still have small chunks of mud that I can't get out, that are stuck in the nooks and crannies of the mud guards and wheel arch.

Re: Washing car with bore water?

Bore water is different wherever ye go, stradbroke eh sand filtered???? could be ok till tapwater is available .......or a freshwater creek

For normal mud and such its better to leave it but for the beach and other places where the material is suspect or the red clay sticky kind i get a fair bit of for some reason, I bought a car cube I usually carry 20-40l of water most places
plus that special bottle of salt assault or degreaser  (I know its not the same as the carwash but it does the job most occaisions especially when its your windscreen covered in crap and the wipers are making it worse  )

                          Thanks fellers.

Alot of people seem to use it to clean there cars and boats, both locals and people on holidays in new and old rigs. Doesnt taste salty and is clear as rain water.

I used it under the car and 2 buckets of fresh potable water for the paint areas on the car.

I only know of one fresh water creek and you need to drive on the beach or through 30 muddy holes to get there

She'll be getting a good dose of Salt Assault and a polish on the weekend
