Has anyone caught the latest of what is going on in Rio de Janeiro in the local news or on tv?
Rio Times - The Violence Continues
Rio Times - Brazilian Forces Take Complexo do Alemão Favela
I'll pretty sure that it started earlier on tuesday (or at least was ongoing - and is by no means finished), I got into Rio tuesday night local time and was promptly raced out of the city by a driver who i could only describe as suicidal - cutting off trucks and speeding down the freeways. Although, when i arrived on the rig the next morning and saw the news reports from the previous night - i think that the word on the street had gotten out that something was going down and this guy didn't want to be caught in the cross fire...
There has been tanks, apc's, 800 troops in conjunction with the military police and drug enforcement storming the favelas trying to clean the city up for the world cup that is coming in 2012 and the olympics in 2014... Its nasty and dangerous - more so than normal!!!!
Work has issued an alert to all personel crew changing through Rio stating that it is "recommended" that we do not leave the hotel. But its too much fun out on the streets so I doubt that will happen - the boys will still be out at the local bars, we always do
