  • Require Family Ideas to do in Melbourne

    G'day fellow PP'ers.
I am looking for some ideas/ places to go to while in Melbourne for a weekend in March. We are flying over to take the kids (2 & 4) to the zoo on the sunday but would like to do something on the saturady. Any ideas.
We will only be using public transport, no problems with that as I am sure the boys will enjoy the trams/ trains as we have nothing like that in Tassie. Have been looking where some camper trailer places are so might go for a ride and check them out but open to some other cheap ideas  .

The aquarium and museum are easy via public transport. Where are you staying in MEL?

We are staying in Collins Street, not sure of name of hotel, I didn't do the booking.
Thanks for those couple of ideas. Need to entertain the boys but not wear them out to much as they will be walking where possible as we only have carry on luggage so no stroller for the 2 yr old .

        Hi VKPrado,
Take the free city circle tram. It will go around the cbd and into docklands. Another option is to take a free Melbourne shuttle bus which will take you to a lot more places than the city circle tram. It will be a good ride to the kids.

        Cheers,

Try scienceworks in williamstown that always has great stuff for kids. The train goes there but you mighjt also get a water taxi from the city for an extra thing to see.

Otherwise pufffing billy out in the east is s kid favorite if they like trains. Easily accessable by public transport just a long day !

If you or you kids are into football, it's always a good experience to go to a big match. Particularly if Collingwood is playing!

Whilst the ideas are mainly based in the city or nearby, why not take a tour bus and go to...
                      - The great ocean road for some sight seeing
                      - Phillip island to see the penguins
                      - Sovereign hill for some gold digging

There's a lot to do really... Here's a few more to add to the list:
                      - st kilda beach and cake shops
                      - chadstone shopping centre
                      - Melbourne central
                      - realto tower
                      - crown casino - shopping and an arcade for the kids.

                      Cheers

Don't you usually leave the kids in the car in the carpark at Crown

CHADSTONE ???? :?  - couldn't think of anything worse meeself but each to his own.

If the kids are into sport
                          - the sport museum at the MCG - plus they do tours of the MCG itself.
                          - Backstage tour of the Rod Laver Arena. ( done that one - very interesting )

                          - Melbourne Aquarium
                          - Fed Square
                          - Werribee Park Zoo
                          - Healesville Sanctuary ( probably need a car for the last two though )

I think the viewing platform at Rialto may be closed now but the Eureka Tower one is cool - has that bit that extends out.
                          Cheers, Wayne

Thanks for all the ideas. As we only get into Melbourne at about 10 am on the Saturday we really only have the afternoon to do some site seeing. As the boys are only 2 & 4 anything we can do that involes sitting will suit me fine or somewhere where they can run loose for awhile is good also.

St Kilda beach might be good as it gives us a ride and then a play on the beach. Will try and stay away from the shopping centres as we only have carry on luggage but it would be good to tease the wife  by taking her to the DFO  soall she could do is look but not buy.

Not my thing either, but some out of towners love that sort of thing, especially since it's the largest shopping center in the southern hemisphere...
