  • Navman over accurate

Have started this thread after heading down to an isolated beach outside cairns on the weekend. Now bear in mind it was early after-noon and the missus wanted to go walking on the beach. So I set the Gps for the Fastest route and we headed out. Just before leaving my Navman sent me a warning "one or more unsealed roads on this route" which I promptly clicked "ok" to and ignored knowing that there is a couple of tracks down that way but assuming the highway would be the computers fastest route.
About 3/4 of the way there cruising the highway the Navman piped up and prompted me for a left turn about 10kms early from the turnoff that I knew was ahead. So I looked at my other half and said "should we turn off?, maybe its the scenic route?" she gave a non-comittal shrug said "yeah, ok."
We drove on a sealed road for 3 or 4 ks and passed a couple of houses then the road became gravel and on we went, now driving alonside a cane field and starting to get suspicious that we may have driven onto someones land but no signs and no farmers came to escort us away so we continued.
After another kilometer had passed the track had narrowed and a tropical shower was coming down but still the gps was urging me on. One final bend went by and we came to a small creek with alot of tyre tracks and rubble at the bottom and visible through the downpour on the opposite bank was a small tin sign nailed to a stake that read " Private Road - No trespassing"
Turns out we had driven for about 5ks across the edge of someones farm only to find the back edge of someone elses farm. We now had to u-turn and backtrack to the highway listing to the gps insisting that I "please make a u-turn where possible".
We stuck to the highway and the sealed road I knew was there all along after that.
It raised the question in my head that has anyone else blundered off the beaten path simply because of their gps?

Have a laugh at this post if you want or simply shake your head at my foolishness if you want or maybe im not alone and technology has failed others to a humorous ending??

my Nav man has asked me to make all sorts of strange turns. sometimes it expects you to take some weird detours that are in no way efficient. I can see why they are cheaper than most.

        yeah I did miss that!
that was simply blind obediance on their part.
I was sceptical of my map indicating it as a public acess road yet saw no signs to the contrary upon leaving the tar.
Bear in mind that I live in Nth Qld, there plenty of minor roads up here that are simply dirt and gravel.
checked google when I got home, the 'road' that I was on ended on their map right about where the tarmac stopped.
In future think ill keep the gps as a resort if im lost and stick to the topo maps when in doubt of a roads course.

I find my navman to be absolutely hopeless. Admittedly it is a bottom of the range unit, but it has no clue whatsoever. If you set it on "shortest" route it will take you the most bizarre way just save 5 meters of road, which is fair enough I guess, except many of the "roads" are either farm tracks or don't even exist any more. If I set it on "fastest" route, it still has trouble calculating where to take me because it doesn't know the speed limit on most roads. It seems to know where most 80km/h zones and school zones are but everything else is 70km/h apparently. I rarely use mine any more, preferring to use Google Maps on my android phone.

My Navman has on lots of occasions led us astray. we bought it while on a interstate trip...punching in a mates address in rural Victoria it led us down what can basically be described as a 4wd goat track! with the wife driving and the camper trailer in tow it was quite a sketchy moment! when i told my mate about the road we came down he said that even the locals rarely use that track!!. I only find the gps useful now to give me a rough idea of how long it will take me to get home..I wonder how many tourists get caught out with them!
