  • Hema Navigator

Hema Navigator looks a reasonable option, as something that will work straight out of the box.
    Website www.hemanavigator.com.au

Runs Route 66 street navigation, which is reportedly not the best around, but "adequate" for most needs.
Also has Oziexplorer and the whole package of Hema maps.

Has anyone purchased / used one of these units?
    What do you think?

Is it worth a couple hundred over a cheap EBay unit that then needs some computer skills and purchase of Oziexplorer and time spent downloading maps (even if free), setting up, etc.

I'm gonna try coercing one of the dealers to loan me one for a tryout for a week.

Mate, goodluck. The in-dash version is about 2 1/2 grand and the hema version is just short of 1 grand.

VMS Car PC lists the feature and dealers of both units. Think I'll be sticking to my Garmin 76.

      .
That in itself is a good reason to give it a miss imo. Route66 is just a terrible attempt at a satnav program and ituses Navteq mapping which imo is the pitts. Way too many mistakes in it to make it a reliable mapping solution.

I have both Route 66 running Navteq maps and Tom Tom using Sensis maps and the TT wins hands down. Especially now that TT have released updatable mapping from users. This one thing makes the TT the best option at the moment.

I would suggest you look at a cheap fleabay unit that you can load WinCe onto and then buy/find the maps you need/want. Would be a hell of a lot cheaper and probably provide the same functionality. Some of the guys have the NAVLINK units which I believe come with iGo which is supposed to be reasonably good. Pick that up for about $200-$250 + Ozi CE for $40 + maps (Hema maps for about $150 I think)

        Hmmm......

Saw it at a camping expo here recently.

For over $900.00 your kidding, extemely poor value for money.
Give me my cheap no name GPS running Oziexplorer anyday.

It's the same thing just one third the price.

            Hello,

Would really steer clear of the Hema Navigators having bought one and experienced it first hand. A grand wasted..

Poor mapping, directions and value. The soft ware doesn't match what is on the screen, no manual, poor GUI, not integrated, 4 hour battery life that only gives 2 hours - the list goes on. There are much better units around, apparently..
            :x
I should have done more research, especially in PradoPoint!
Am trying my best to get a refund.

Gayle, just tell them that it does not perform as advertised and is unsuitable for your needs. I would hope that whomever you bought it from would do the right thing and allow you to swap it for a different unit with price adjustment in your favour.

                Re: Hema Navigator

                Good news..
I managed to get a refund on my Hema and bought a TomTom 930i. It all but sings and dances for me. Love it to bits.
Thanks for the input from all.
A lesson well learned is to search PradoPoint first.

Funny... I was only reading some advertising material again the other day about the Hema Navigator and started to think it might be a worthwhile option. Then I re-read this link and some other info and reminded myself why not. Still way too expensive.

Must admit, I am not sure on that one.. I find the tomtom maps are okay. I am almost sure that they come as a dedicated unit also. Might have to pick Mav's brains on that one.
