  • OSGB mapping available for download

I know it is a bit off topic, but for any one who is interested OSGB is now making some of their mapping of the UK available for free download. This is after always charging very high prices so is quite a change. You can just go to their web site and download 1:250K mapping, or order DVD's of more detailed maps. Also a lot of vector data available if you are interested.

The raster maps can be easily imported into OziExplorer which will produce the MAP files.

Re: OSGB mapping available for download

I am interested, but the sad fact is that after months of internal wrangling, they actually have not released the mapping that would be very useful for walkers or 4wders.

    Grough News Story

The results of the three-month OS consultation were released at midnight. The expected free provision of Explorer mapping – used by most walkers and outdoor enthusiasts – was replaced by a new VectorMap District service to be launched in May. This will not include information on footpaths and bridleway essential to walkers to navigate in rural areas.

The Ramblers did give a cautious welcome to the free 1:10,000-scale Street View maps that will be available free to the public from the OS’s OpenData site and which can be reused by both private and commercial concerns.

The charity said the free datasets will not include digital versions of 1:25,000 Explorer and 1:50,000 Landranger maps.
I was always sceptical that they would free the 25/50k mapping, they have a lot of collateral business attached to that data...

Here is another option for a free source of maps (and application to support these maps) for Great Brtian. Not sure what resolution you can go down to but I seem to recall that these are vector and had pretty good detail:

Been there, done that. Quo is software, and the marketing plan is to give away the software but sell the mapping. It does come with a 1:100k UK map for free, and you can choose a few tiles to play with for the first month, but after that, pay up buddy The software is ok, but not really up to OziExplorer standards. Mapping prices are better than other providers mostly because you select the areas you want, you don't have to buy the whole of Scotland to visit Ben Nevis. They also run special discount offers every now and then.

I'm using Grough Route - its an online web based mapping application, with full access to the OSGB 1:25k and 1:50k maps. Route transfers to/from Garmin or GPX are supported, as well as printing etc. For an occasional UK trip, it's a good and economical solution (but not free - costs are £1.80 per month, month by month - you don't need to buy a year)

If you want OSGB mapping on your GPS, you will have to pay for it. The Openstreetmap/openmtbmap projects are getting better all the time, and may suit in some areas.
