  • Garmin Nuvi 1490T has anyone got one

Hi we are thinking of purchasing a Garmin Nuvi 1490T and was wondering if anyone has one and how they fnd it:?: Also if you run the topo plus program with it. Trying to work out what the best GPS would be have looked at the Hema 5" as well but it is a bit over priced.

I have one of these however at this stage I have not put the topo maps on it. I spoke to http://www.gpsoz.com.au/ prior to purchasing mine. They recommended it as a good all round GPS and are selling them in a package on their website. You can run topo maps plus a way point program.

I replaced a tomtom that had a fatal problem with the Garmin a couple of months ago. The 1490T is not perfect by any means, but works pretty well.

I'm running multiple maps, City Navigator (sensis), Shonky, OSM and I have 5m contours as well. (This was my main reason for getting the Garmin)
Bluetooth works well for a phone though I dont use it anymore with the new stereo
I would like to use the OBDII eco route, but alas, I've got an 05 TD and reading about the scanguage it wont work.

        Dislikes
Far fewer 'options' than the tomtom. I cant choose to have some POI's always viewable at any scale is just 1 example.
Not enough detail shown when the zoom is out

        Observations
It sometimes takes a while for the map to refresh
The traffic is a bit of a gimick, not very accurate from what I have seen

Overall a pretty good unit that could be greatly improved with a bit of software tweeking.
Got mine from gpsoz, great service and very knowledgeable.

        Cheers

I just got a nuvi 1690 to replace a 760. The map position updating is much better / faster. Some of the "online" features are good, such as google local searching, fuel prices, the rest i probably won't use. I have multiple maps loaded , but no topo maps yet. So far I like it. I think one of the OBDII adapters will be next.

JB HiFi has them for $333. Have only had it for four days (bought it for the new VX I picked up on Friday night) and have found it very user friendly. The complimentary map update worked, and I signed up on the GPSData site and downloaded the safety camera files.

              Nice features are;

Speed & Speed Limit are displayed on the bottom right hand corner, and speed turns red when you are over the limit, not in your face, but enough to let you be aware.
Spoken street names, the Aussie voice is not quite as obnoxious as the Yank one was.
Has some cute "eco" features that the kids like to use to keep an eye on my driving
Maintains routes and there is a tracking feature you can get to with a PC - so don't go pressing reset and offering it for evidence, keeps a lovely .csv with long/lat/speed & some other
              Bluetooth works
              Easy to read
Discreet safety POI warnings - does not obscure screen or speed

It is a better proposition than my previous 245W, and has more onboard memory, means the Micro SD is optional.

              Cheers

Re: Garmin Nuvi 1490T has anyone got one

Going to Hijack this post momuntarily... Since its been quite for a while and didn't seem worth starting a new thread...

I'm thinking of getting one of the following very near in the future - Garmin 1690 or Garmin 3790T.
Looking for anyone's experiences with them, thoughts or ideas?

I think the 1690 has a bigger screen? and wondering what the T means?

EDIT: Price not really an issue, I can get the 3790T cheaper for some reason?

                Cheers Matt

I think the "T" has something to do with live traffic updates.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 1490T has anyone got one

                    Hi Matt,

I had the 1690 and replaced it with the 3790T. Unless you really like the "online" features of the 1690 don't get it, the 3790T is much better. I found I could get any of the online info on my iphone and it is better and faster at doing those things than the 1690. You also have to pay an annual fee for the 1690 services. The 3790T has lifetime traffic info. The screen on the 3790T is also much better. The only thing the 3790T can't do is connect to the ECO route HD, plugs into the vehicle OBDII port and provides engine status info, similar to Scanguage but nicer looking. (there is a thread with pictures of this). When I bought the 3790T I got free lifetime map updates, happy with that!

And cos it looks nice and did pretty much what i wanted...

Whats it like for maps? Did you get any of the topo maps? Coverage of the standard maps?

Both come with the latest version of "whereis" AUS / NZ street maps, the 3790T can display buildings in 3D in city areas, I don't think the 1690 does, but it's not a great feature.

I am running both OZ topo version 2 and garmin topo Australia V3 (latest version), both have missing tracks and info depending on where you are. you cannot run both maps at the same time, you have to switch between them.
The topo maps are OK for my purposes, although I am starting to make a HEMA style GPS, with a cheap Windows CE GPS I got off eBay.

Thanks for your advise there mate - might hold off on the Garmin, and find a windows CE gps as well...
Of all electrical gadgets and gismos, circuits and ideas - gps is the one that completely messes my head!!!

Too many options, mods, alternatives and extras to easily say that one instead of this one... :? :? :?

The Windows CE / HEMA / OZI explorer - GPS, is completely different to a Garmin with topo maps, much more involved in setup too. There is a good tutorial thread on OZI explorer:

                            http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=5824

Don't let me put you off the 3790T, it's great, and the topo maps coverage is quite good.
Neither system will provide auto routing in an "off road" setting, you have to select your route and they will guide based on what you have selected.
There's alot to learn about the OZI explorer setup & I'm still learning. As for Garmins, there is heaps of support on the web for these.
