finally got something worthy of building & keeping..

    08 GXL V6 prado
just under 100 on the clock with full service history
5sp auto, dual climate control for passenger and driver plus rear aircon
absolutely stock, not one accessory or option fitted when purchased last week...

plan is to keep this one as stock looking as possible but have it do everything we want it to do. That and mrs ricecracker has strict criteria like the spare wheel cover has to stay on (can't go up in tyre size), only 1 aerial etc and things like xrox bars aren't either of our cup of tea. This will be her daily plus used for trips, we're heading up to fitzroy crossing in a few weeks...

    so, on order is:
    - arb deluxe winchbar
    - tigerz 1200lb winch
    - 40mm king lift with raw shocks
    - mickey STZ in standard size
    - outback accessories dual batt tray - fitted but not wired yet
    - digoptions satnav bluetooth stereo - fitted but haven't done the reverse cam yet
    - sand grabba mats throughout
    - tinted slimline visors & clear bonnet protector

and to transfer onto it once the bullbar goes on:
    100w hid rallye 4000's
100w hid bulbs in the bar fog lights
    2 way

and this weekend should see my old tracklander with an 80w panel sitting up top with ctek management and a genuine towbar bolted on i bought off gumtree.

then later in the year, rear diff lock, haven't decided on electric or air yet.

    Hi Rice cracker
Nice purchase there, its good to see a blank canvas getting built up.
Dont kid yourself about keeping her stock, the mods really enhance the offroad and touring ability of the Prado.
Keep us informed with the future additions.
    Cheers

yeah i've thought about going bigger rubber, the dilemma i've got is I've been really happy with the STZ's on my old rig and the only sizes that are applicable to the prado are 265/65/17 or 275/70/17 which from what i have read, is a bit much and it's hard enough keeping under the speed limit when the needle over-reads let alone under-reading. For the moment I'm happy to keep them stock size, the sort of tripping we have planned is long range (perth-kunnunara) (perth to adelaide, esperance etc) all pretty high mileage, the relatively unchanged economy for now will be a bonus.. i appreciate your feedback

Been busy with the old girl the last few weekends...

        Fitted:
        Genuine Towbar
I thought the tracklander was a bit overkill, so I put 3 rhino bars on instead with the solar panel hidden between them
        Arb deluxe winch bar
        Tigers 12000 plasma rope winch
        rallye 4000's with 100w 4300k HID's
        converted arb foglights to 55w 3800k HID's
        fitted the slimline visors
fitted up the digoptions unit and reverse camera
put some 10w led work lights on the back of the roof rails
put in second battery cradle, battery and ctek battery management in the rear little pocket
and just yesterday had king springs with raw predators up front and raw nitro in the rear

Bit light on with build pictures, but here's how she stands now:

Been a bit too long since I've updated..

            Now running:
            2x rallye 4000 with 100w 4300k HID
            2x nightstalker 75w 4300k hid
            ebay roofrack
solar panel thru a ctek 250
            rear lokka
fj rims with kumho 265/70/17 mt's
got rid of tigerz winch and replaced with a champion steel one
got rid of polyairs and replaced with firestones
changed rear springs from medium to hd
            replaced rear bumper 3 times

happy to answer questions if there's interest.

Gday raydes, I have replaced one shock but only because it pretended to be a wheel and ground the bottom eye down to nothing when one of the alloys worked it's way off the car. I've got a pretty heavy rear end with home made mdf drawers full of recovery gear, tools and a fridge. I've been fairly happy with them but apart from the stock ones, I haven't had anything else on this car. I think I'll go bilstein when these give up.

Why did you replace the Tigerz winch? was there issues with it?

I hear so many mixed reports on their gear, it's really hard to know if it's any good or not.
Blue 120 GXL Lots of ARB goodies and 1 mysterious switch fitted by previous owner - I still don't know what it does

yep issues with it, it burned 3 solenoid packs out and is now seized. Used less than 10 times and never dunked in water or anything like that. Also, the "dyneema" rope was starting to fray

                        Hey mate,
Nice rig there! Love those rims with your paint color. How is the rear Lokka going for ya? Replacing the rear bumper 3 times is a good excuse for a rear bar

                        Cheers,

                          CHeers Dueler.

The lokka has it's moments more often than not. I've moved up to the kimberleys and it's surprising how often I end up in a near fully flexed position where I would previously have needed momentum and just chug straight outta there.

The disadvantages I have encountered are that the rear tyres need to be near on the exact amount of tread, otherwise while driving in a straight line, it will push you the direction you have the smaller tyre on. Wheel alignment dudes pull their hair out with it.

I've had an auto locker in a part time 4wd before and it was "just" manageable when it was auto, but when i converted to manual, it became a pig. With the prado, having so much of the torque going into the front wheels, you really have to push it to have some locker action on the hard top.

Even pulling 4.2ton it handled ok Just for the record, I don't make a habit of pulling overweight but when we packed our house up into the big trailer, since it was a 2500 trip, I thought I'd visit the weighbridge before I left Perth. Got quite a shock when my combined was 6.7t and the trailer was 4.2t. So I unpacked all the heavy things and put them in a different trailer to spread the load and got it down under 3t (which the trailer is rated for) and a friend brought it up with his ute. To give you an idea, here is a pic of the size of the thing..

I've had a few financial obstacles that keep preventing me placing an order, but as soon as I can, I will be placing an order for an AJ120 special.
