Just recently had a safari snorkel fitted. In preparation for this, I decided to modify the airbox and intake duct, shamelessly stealing from MickL's build-up.

The idea of this was to remove any airflow restrictions from the intake. I don't really believe this has had any effect on performance, but I've been throwing around the idea of fitting an upgraded top mount intercooler with fan and upgrading the exhaust, so my thinking is that all combined there might be some benefit overall. As with most of my tinkering with the car now, I really just did it coz I enjoy having a project to work on
First removed the airbox from the vehicle and cut away the pre-spinner. Then also decided to cut away some more internals to open up the inlet as much as possible:

I sealed up the drain at the base of the airbox. This pic shows the drain with the rubber split-grommet removed.

I also cleaned the turbo inlet with carby cleaner (there was a film of carbon build up, but it came away easily.

The new intake duct is made from 3 inch silicone elbows and a short length of 3 inch aluminium pipe. The turbo inlet is 2.75 inch, so the lower silicone elbow is a reducing type.

Changing the intake duct also means the plastic resonator has been removed (usually mounted on top of the airbox with a tee-connection into the air intake). I gave the MAF sensor a clean for good measure as well.

And here's a pic of the new snorkel fitted (I couldn't trust myself to drill into the panel-work, so paid to have it done). I've noticed a vibration at idle and low revs coming from the guard, so will have a look to see if any of the mountings need to be tightened up. All-up I'm very happy - there's a nice a little gurgle and intake whine from the snorkel, and I'm confident now the air intake is as good as it can get.

Also just fitted my replacement light-bar. I was going to replace the original Aurora 30 inch bar, but found a really good deal on a similar bar from a mob called Cosmoblaze. I'll have to wait until it gets dark to see if it holds up to the awesome light output of the Aurora. It was over 40% cheaper than the Aurora...

*Update: I'd say light output is 80-90% of the Aurora bar.. so for 40% less cost, definitely a good buy. Build quality is great too - not an ebay cheapie.

Received my TG150 transfer case guard from Brains. I needed the TG150 because I have the traction control option with the actuator box hanging off the back of the transfer case. The guard is great quality and fitting was a ten minute job with the detailed instructions provided. I'm getting reasonably happy with the level of protection under the car now - just need someone to put out a fuel tank guard... Hint Hint AMTS!

Finally fitted the new top mount intercooler. This is an Aero 2 intercooler from PWR. I had them flip one of the end tanks, and had my local exhaust shop weld on a bung to take the pressure sensor. Basically resulted in a 5% improvement in performance in terms of acceleration and fuel consumption. Full details in thread:

Even though I had the intake all cleaned around 20,000 km ago I decided to remove the EGR valve and intake elbow to have a look. I was a bit surprised by the amount of build-up from so few k's and having had the catch can fitted since the clean-out was done. Here's pics of the dirty and then cleaned EGR valve and elbow:

And just for reference, if you were going to fit one of those dodgy EGR restriction plates then it would probably make sense to do it while you have the EGR removed.

To do that, you would want to unbolt the power steering fluid reservoir and tie it back out of the way like this:

Then you would unclip the electrical connector that sits next to the pipe going from the EGR cooler back to the head like this:

Then you would undo the bolt holding the EGR cooler in place like this:

And finally you would undo the two nuts that hold the EGR pipe to the head and carefully wiggle the EGR cooler and pipe free so that you could slide in a restrictor plate between the head and the EGR pipe here:
