  • Ivan's 2008 D4D GXL

I bought my first Prado, a 90 series in 2002, and we always loved it.

The build up of that car is at http://www.lcool.org/technical/90_se...rado/ivan.html for anyone interested.

We replaced it in 2005 with a 100 Series Land Cruiser which also got some modifications so that we could do the trips we had planned.

The lease on the 100 Series was up in Dec 2010, and we had always wanted to go back to a Prado, so in Jul 2010 started looking for a white 2008 GXL. It had to be a D4D (sick of petrol economy), manual (kids learning to drive now), with under 50,000 k for under $50,000. We found the car at Traralgon and had it shipped up to Canberra in October. It had The same day we left for Brisbane for a holiday with friends and loved the way that it drove (and the economy we got on the highway (9.5l/100).

There were quite a few things which I had taken off the 100 Series which I would transfer to the Prado:

    - GME 3400 UHF Radio
    - Rhino Rack (including ARB awning, and Fred's Arm (I reckon there's not much point having an awning on the side of a car - when all the action is at the rear - the Freds Arm lets you pivot the awning around in about 30 seconds)
    - Custom Rack Sack for the roof rack (better size and quality than commercial options)
    - OffRoadSystems Drawer System
    - home made fridge slide
    - Engel 39l Fridge
    - Twine Shower, and 12lpm pump
    - Air Compressor
    - Fuse block and power regulator to run all the extras at the rear of the car
    - Dell X51V PDA to run TomTom and OziExplorer
    - Water Pump and 60litres of water - links to this from the 90 Series build up above, but I don't think the jerries will fit so easily in the 120.

There was still quite a few things that I wanted to do, that had to be done new - all of this was done through Ritchie at Hume OffRoad:

    - Replace the Sovereign Bull Bar with an ARB Deluxe. Much better angles for off road.
    - Driving lights
    - Safari Snorkel
    - Suspension (Ridepro HD springs and Bilstein Premium Shocks through Darren at AutoCraft - the third car he's set up for me.
    - Second battery tray
    - Cargo Barrier
    - Mickey Thompson 265/70/17 AT4
    - extended Diff Breathers
    - Kaymar rear bar (didn't like the exposed rear panel - thought it could be easily damaged. Also the tow bar was way too low)

In addition to the items I brought across from the 100 Series, there were a couple of other 'new' items that I fitted myself
    - Turbo Timer
    - ScanGuage II
    - Second battery
    - 100A cable from front to rear with circuit breaker
    - Run speaker wire to the rear of the car for a UHF extension (useful in camp)
    - Replaced the power to the front 12v outlets so that it is constant power, and also ran a power outlet into the pouch at the back of the front seats - kids can connect their bits and pieces and if the power source is in the seat pouch, then all the left over cabling can also be in there out of the way rather than all over the floor.

Future things I will get around to soon:

    - Rear fold down table - similar to that on the 90 series link above
    - Rear LED light for 'the kitchen'

Future major items I hope to get done:

    - Front and Rear ARB Air Lockers (I've broken a front diff before and it wasn't pretty)
    - Sliders

So here's the photos - some for comparison, so have shown the car a month ago (as purchased), to what it is now - enjoy

    The 90 Series

    The 100 Series

New off the block - well, as new as a 2008 car can be.. ;-)

The bullbar - not very big on the Sovereign bar - prefer ARB - better approach angle IMHO

The new bar - getting lights on it on Monday.

Side view of the Sovereign bar

Side view of the ARB bar

The rear of the Prado - wheel cover isn't going to fit on the new tyres, rear bar looks very vulnerable!

The Kaymar bar - a bit more solid if it gets close to the ground

Side view of the standard rear bar

Side view of the Kaymar bar

Dell Axim X51v for TomTom and OziExplorer

seems to be a popular place to put it - out of the way in any case

Finished product from the side - complete with Rhino Rack, Freds Arm and ARB awning (all straight off the 100 series)

Nice looking rig there Ivan. I had previously read your build on LCOOL for your 90 and have also read a number of your trips (Cape, Hay River and LCOOL Double Crossing). A friend, whom I believe you have met on a number of trips, has just had a drawer system built up for his 100 and has borrowed your water storage design. ARe you looking at chipping at some stage to improve power/economy or just happy with what you currently have? Will you be getting rear wheel swing arms for the Kaymar or was it just for a stringer arse than what the standard plastic guard could offer?

G'day Nick, looks like I've been uncovered ;-) - who is your mate?

The water storage set up is the cheapest and best mod that I've ever done - nothing better than easy water without unpacking half the car! http://www.lcool.org/technical/90_se...tem/water.html for anyone interested..

No plans to chip at the moment, but we'll see how things progress

No plans for rear swing arms - had one on the 100 and it's just one more thing to open! - my brother has bought the same car but silver and has fitted the same tyres - we travel the big trips together, so have an extra spare if I lean on him!

The bar was just for a stronger butt - interested in whether many have lost theirs in their travels?

        Cheers

        Ivan

Mine has always stayed where it is but have been careful. Have only knocked it hard once and suprisingly there is no markings at all. There are a few on here that have dropped it off the rear but not many. Still the increased departure and more solid rear end would be reassuring.

Nice job there Ivan, I am thinking of buying or building a rear bar for mine aswell, i am looking for somewhere to carry a wheelchair. Just wondering about the tow hitch, is that incorporated into the rear bar or is it the toyota hitch? If not original then how high or low does it sit in relation to the original tow hitch.
What sort of dollars for a Kaymar bar if you dont mind me asking?

            Cheers Andrew

              Ivan,

The new setup is looking good! How do you find the space for the kids compared to the 100 series?

I've copied your water setup when I did mine for 120 Prado. I also added one way valves, so that I can disconnect
any of the jerries to refill with the water. The jerries fit OK in the 120, thought I had to put one of them on a bit
of an angle (I have used angle door stop under one of the jerries)
You can find my storage/water setup thread here - viewtopic.php?t=1186

The freds Arm concept also looks interesting (never seen it before - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uGdhkh4_k0).
Thought looking at the prices quoted for the fred's arm it is cheaper to buy ARB awning for the rear (thought it not as wide as the side awning
and there are no added weight of extra awning, but you can use both front and rear at the same time). Fox Wing would be another
              alternative.

              Cheers,

              Stan

G'day Andrew, no it's a different hitch, and incorporated in the rear bar - and much prefer steel rather than cast by the way!! Shame I didn't measure the heights - but what I think you'll find is that the actual ball height is the same, the difference being that the Toyota hitch is permanently at that height and the the tongue and ball just come (almost) straight out horizontally. The Kaymar hitch is mounted higher (right under the bar which is quite narrow, and it's the L shaped piece on the end of the tongue which drops down to the same height as the Toyota tongue - benefits being that:

                a. you can remove the tongue off road and then the hitch is higher
                b. you can turn the Kaymar tongue over if you want a higher towing position (ie if you have your trailer with axle under spring rather than over spring)

                Bar was $2180

                Cheers

                  G'day Stan,

Slightly smaller - but they're doing ok - and on most trips one or more are swapping with other cars anyway..

Yes, still not sure though about the water - mainly because of the length of the ORS drawers - I reckon the back of the cargo area is a good 100mm shorter - worst case, ORS have found a water container that fits the space with their drawers..

I thought about an awning mounted on the back - but it's just too narrow - any rain (or sun) on an angle and you're still going to get it.

Saw the Fox Wing, but I didn't like the mechanics of the pivot point (single point of failure), and have read about them being taken out by wind gusts..

                  Cheers

                  Ivan
