  • Nikon or Canon

Just to start the debate on a gear topic - the age old question.

Do you use Nikon or Canon gear?

I've always had Nikon gear - before, during and after completing my Bachelor in Photography (yes you can get one).

Although I have been tempted, my lens kit keeps me in Nikon.

I have Nikon gear. Many years ago when I went from a manual Minolta to an auto focus camera I decided to jump ship to Canon or Nikon. I cannot remember the Canon model but I bought the F90 because I am left eyed and the Canon aperture control was difficult to use unless you are right eyed, my right thumb kept poking me in the right eye! Since then I have kept with Nikon because even old old manual lenses I have picked up work fine on the DSLRs. I am about to buy a D800 and retire my much used D200. Like everyone else it feels as though I have been waiting since 1967 for the D800 to be released and I will finally pick mine up in May when I head over to Japan (for a change).

I really don't think there is much between the equivalent models of Nikon and Canon and for me it is only lenses and my left eye keeping me with Nikon. I do think that the D800 is going to blitz the opposition for a little while though...

I have a Cannon 400D my first SLR camera and I reckon it's brilliant. I realise its not as great as some of the more professional models but I'm happy with it. Takes great photo's. have a Wide Angle lens and the standard lens that came with it. Keep meaning to get something around the 200mm mark, but keep finding little things to do on the prado.

Nikon for me. Although the Canon gear is equally as good. I think it depends when you buy your kit as to which one just brought out the latest and greatest, I bought mine when Nikon had just released a great camera (D7000) then canon has a go at bettering it.

I have shot using Pentax since 1984. Really, the main factor in great photography is found just behind the viewfinder. Great glass helps too!

I chose Canon when I first moved over from a Pentax system back in 1996. Pentax was great in the film days and for amature photography but lacked the support professional photography required. Not that CPS (Canon Professional Services) is much better now days

My decision was based on two things mainly...
            1. It felt better to hold, more logical in it's control placements... Nikon users will disagree but I'm referring to film days when you couldn't modify which dials did what.
            2. Canon's lens' were cheaper 'after the initial purchase' than Nikon's were... all that's changed now though.

Having taught photography for the last 15 years at a local photography college I have handled just about every camera make/model under the sun and would still say the Canon is still a more user friendly camera

            My kit...

            Canon 1Ds mkIII (Now a back-up body)
            Canon 5d mkII (main body)
(on order... Canon 1Dx and 5D mkIII)
            Canon 16-35mm f2.8 lens
            Canon 24-105mm IS lens
            Canon 24mm TSE lens
            Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS lens
            Canon 100mm macro
soon to purchase 50mm f1.2 lens and 135mm f2.0 lens (still undecided as to which will be the best combination for my work)

There's also a Mamiya RB67 kit collecting dust sadly... one day I'll shake it off and have another play with film... I do miss film
            Cheers, Leon

                This is a no brainer. Canon!!!! I have a 20D, 40D and just added a 7D to the stable. Got a 70-200 f2.8, 12-24 f4, 17-85 f3.5-4.5 and a 18-135 f3.5-5.6.
Good glass, practice and knowledge is the key to great photography.

Started with a Nikon D50 as it felt better in my hands than the equivalent Canon. It then spiralled downwards from there and I now end up with:
                  2x D700 with MB-D10 grip
                  20/2.8
                  50/1.8
                  16-35/4
                  24-70/2.8
                  70-200/2.8
                  SB-600, SB-700
Lots of bags, tripods, tripod heads
Oh and a very handy Panasonic LX3 for when I can't lug all that stuff around.

Currently looking at purchasing my first dslr, after research and using a mates canon 60d it is currently winning. Does anyone know what the equivalent Nikon model would be so I can make my final decision.

I'm a canon man. I've just gone back to film; I like having physical hard copies of photos.

                      I'm currently using an eos1v, eos1n and eos 1rs with 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8, 18-35 2.8, 50 1.8 and one other I can't think of right now.

                      If I do shoot digital it's with a 40d, s95 or g12.

I much prefer the layout of the canon cameras over the nikons.

Why did I know that this would be the first topic? Ah, well, I'll join the fray by explaining my non participation. My name is Ian and I'm an alco...oops, sorry, wrong meeting...I am a Pentax user.
The first SLR camera I bought when I was a student in the 1970s was a Pentax K1000 - built like a brick, fully manual everything with a mechanical shutter and could run battery free, albeit without metering. I survived a while with just one lens, 50mm f1.4, but soon started to expand the lens collection. When I bought my next camera body it was necessarily a Pentax so I could retain the growing suite of lenses. I am now on my 9th camera body K-5 and also still use K-20D. I would probably move to Canon-Nikon if I could afford to replace my whole kit but most of my spare $$ have been sucked into the mobile hide (Prado 150 GX).

I agree mjrandom, the specs on the D800 look fantastic for the $$. It would be my choice if I could afford to climb out of the Pentax rabbithole ;-)
