Number plate visibility laws NSW

G'Day All

I've just got my 120 back from its 120,000 KM service and the mechanic said all was good except a worn rear tyre and that my front number plate was illegal. I said how is it illegal I didn't make it in my shed, it was the genuine article from the RTA. The mechanic said that it's placement was illegal even though it was mounted in the factory holes my nudge bar was partially obscuring it from my mates with speed cameras.

So I had to move my number plate or face the possibility of a fine. Ain't it great when laws change and the first you know about are the flashing red and blue lights behind you.

I've noticed that on 150 series Prado's in WA, when the factory nudge bar is installed they also put a metal bracket where the license plate bolts onto the bumper. This extends the license plate forward a few centimeters, which I assume makes it visible at the correct angle and technically "legal".

We've had the same problem with some of our trucks at work, have been registered since 2008, and nothing has changed on them, passed inspections every year then about a month ago, a driver got a warning that the rear number plate was obscured. RTA have changed their vehicle monitoring cameras, now shot from 45deg above, so now we have to change all the trucks!! no warning, no info!!

Ignorance of the law is no defence.

Instead of watching Australia's got talent or watching the footy grand final or Bathurst you should have been studying the various state vehicle standards and department of transport circulars. This way you could stay abreast of all the changes and not have to contribute to the state coffers by way of paying fines. Yeah, right.

Been a ticket in existence in Qld for the past 15 years at least for obscured plates...
