An international tourist discovered that his rented VW Amarok doesn't float after coming un-stuck on the Tanami Road near Wolfe Creek about 100km from Halls Creek on Thursday. Heavy rain, which saturated parts of northern WA and the NT, caused creeks to flow. The tourist attempted to cross a floodway but was washed away. Luckily, he was able to activate his PLB and was rescued. Unfortunately, the car didn't make it. A lesson for all, not only foreign tourists, in how quickly the conditions can change and to always keep an eye on weather fronts/cyclones coming through. And to carry the appropriate safety equipment should things go pair shaped.

No pics. Halls Creek Shire responded and picked the fella up from a local homestead. Roads throughout the shire were closed due to flooding.Dave

You got to wonder. I had a hire car whilst working up in Broome in 2012. When I took it back (Avis) they went over it with a fine tooth comb looking at every scratch and mark. Fortunately, I noted and took pictures of them at the start. "No driving on the beach" was emphasized multiple times before the keys were handed over.Dave

Well, you know how long the Tanami Road is. If you start your journey when the road is open the weather can change and hit the other end. You would probably never know. Especially if you were prospecting or sight-seeing and camping for a few days. So it is possible that he never knew the road was closed or flooded.Last edited by Bushbasher; 24-12-2014, 01:40 AM.Dave
