  • Just test drove a Tesla Model S....

Well after bumping into the first Tesla Australia salesman the other night and having a chat, my wife finally persuaded me to test drive one as she wants us to get one as the 'family car' and leave the Prado for the weekend adventures. Yeah okay love where we going to find $100K.....

Anyway after spending an hour driving around Melbourne I gotta say what a car! Its unbelievable especially when you compare it to any other electric/hybrid piece of crap offered by the main manufacturers.

First up this thing just drives like any other 'luxury' car out there. No weirdness, it even creeps when you take your foot off the footbrake and the things so solid that even if you did have a big engine up front you probably wouldn't hear it. Just feels like a big audi/merc etc. The controls funnily enough are all supplied by Mercedes (dash, indicators etc) so its all very normal. The main thing is a HUGE central touchscreen that controls everything from car dynamics to the stereo system. I'm not too sold on this touchscreen but i guess people will get used to it like those weird knobs that now appear in everything from top end BMWs through to Mazdas.

Anyway so driving around Melbourne in rush hour all very normal....until we hit the eastern. The dealer says 'put yer foot down' so i do. Now i cant exactly remember what happened next but it seemed to involve both me and my wife swearing alot and my insides trying to force their way past my spine and through the seat. To say this thing is quick of the mark is an understatement. Its amazing. You just press the pedal and boom your gone. No build up, no change down just BANG and you are gone. Instant and linear torque. Anyway i did a few more of these 'tests' whilst my wife asked the hard questions, range, charging, maintenance etc. i would have done but i couldn't wipe the grin off my face....

So seems like they are building a few 'supercharger' stations every 250km on the main routes up the east coast and to Adelaide. 20mins for another 250km range, 1 hour for 500km range. If you want to charge it at home its takes a bit longer....13km per hours charge which was a bit disappointing. Maintenance is just wheels and tyres etc The engine doesn't need anything really. Plus the batteries and engine has an 8 year unlimited km warranty...wish they did that for my Prado. Its also constantly upgraded via downloads like an iphone (although hmm after my iphone shat itself moving to IOS8 they may have to install a bit more confidence). A recent upgrade was hill start assist.....It seriously looks like a 1,000,000km car.

Oh and price...starts at 100K goes up to 180k ....but they are bringing out a smaller version that will be 50k in a few years so if that has the jaw dropping performance i reckon im sold! Would make a great runabout and second car.

Did have a face palm moment though when the guy started talking up the Model X (the SUV version) as a 4wd....hmmm er no, 21in wheels and low profiles dont work in the bush........
2013 (12 build) GX Auto.......with safari snorkel, toyota bar, tow bar, roof racks, led spots with fancy newpro switchgear, uniden remote UHF and aerial, ARB bash plates, Roadsafe recovery points, digoptions radio, general grabber AT2s, cheap ebay roof rack that has stood up surprisingly well.....

Bring on a decent off road capable 4wd with an elec motor for each wheel ( instant diff locks) and a small petrol generator to keep the battery full. For around the same price as a normal 4wd.
Not too much to ask is it?

Let the trendy super rich have the novelty for a while to pay for the initial model run.

When the "look at me" factor wears off we can start talking practical usability.

The Tesla is providing serious performance capability at that price level. I will admit to looking at one as well but too expensive and too limited at the moment. If there was a charging station at work and maybe other locations and there were some incentives like no LCT or FBT or GST then it would start to make sense. Just not yet.

they just need to figure out to how to ramp up a tranformer in car so that they can all achieve maximum charge from standard 240V, rather than needing a specific station anywhere.

          physics proffessionals.... ok go!

Interesting, I see a red one on the freeway here in Perth quite regularly, heading into and out of the city, have seen it heading towards Mandurah in the arvo so must live down that way and commute to the city.
But if they only went on sale in December must have been a private import? Because I've been seeing this one for a couple of years.

On the way home tonight, pulled along side the 1st Telsa I have ever seen in Perth - for an electric car left me and the Prado 120 behind when the lights turned green.. Great acceleration for sure

They drag race electric cars in USA and also do burnout comps with them.

"Unlike other electric cars, the Tesla cannot be recharged via a normal power point and requires a special charger to be installed at home or work at a cost of up to $10,000 — and may also need to have the local electricity substation upgraded at a cost of more than $50,000, according to experts."

So, will my 3 phase take out the whole suburb?

The Roadster and Model S are tech demonstrators effectively and entirely intended to be aimed at premium end of the market. The roadster and was specifically designed to beat Ferrari's and Porsches.

                              Their plan is:
                              Build sports car
Use that money to build an affordable car
Use that money to build an even more affordable car
While doing above, also provide zero emission electric power generation options

Most new technology has high initial unit cost. Their strategy is to enter at the high end of the market, where customers are prepared to pay a premium, and then drive down market as fast as possible to higher unit volume and lower prices with each successive model. The end game for their cars are ones that are 50% cheaper and batteries that are 30% cheaper. The Model S is roughly half the cost of the Roadster, and their next model will be roughly half the cost of the Model S.

They're also setting themselves up to be Li-On battery suppliers to the industry - auto, domestic and industrial.

In the US you can also purchase their home solar panel that will give your car a 80km of range a day. So if you are a low mileage driver you'd be energy positive.

                              Elon Musk:
we will be offering a modestly sized and priced solar panel from SolarCity, a photovoltaics company (where I am also the principal financier). This system can be installed on your roof in an out of the way location, because of its small size, or set up as a carport and will generate about 50 miles per day of electricity
