It is a light ship.....moored in a channel to warn ships of a hazard...like a floating light house. The Carpentaria light ship was torn from its moorings on 9th January 1979 by cyclone Greta, drifted for 24 hours and finally grounded on a beach between Crab Island and Vrilya Point on the Cape York Peninsula. It was too badly damaged to be saved.
